With great sorrow, my wife and I learned of the passing of Henrietta Yurchenco, my long-time client and a person I was proud to call a friend. Meetings with Henrietta, most of them by phone over the years were more a pleasure and full of wisdom than work for me.

As my wife had known Henrietta only over the phone for many years, our dinner with her in New York in 2005 is looked upon by my wife as a cherished experience.

Henrietta's view of the world, her passion for social justice, and the knowledge of ethnic music which she brought to the world are matched by very few people.

I will look back with pleasure on all of my meetings with her.

We extend our sincerest condolences to son Peter, his wife Ingrid and her grandchildren.

I best remember Henrietta as a peppery woman with strong opinions, a big heart, and wonderfully expansive hospitality. Both she and her food had zesty "tam."

I attended a lecture last winter at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Music where I heard a presentation by and about Henrietta Yurchenco. She was to have been there, but was ill, so she spoke to us by phone for a long time, during which she discussed with the interviewer and with people in the audience her experiences encountered in interviewing and taping North African Sephardic Jews before they left for Israel. It was thrilling to hear her speak and poignant for me when I read her obituary yesterday in the New York Times. May her memory be for a blessing.
