HENRY DREYER Obituary

Henry Arnold Dreyer Jr. Proud farmer, a 'gentle giant of a man,' co-owner of Dreyer Farms in Cranford, served as mayor of Cranford Henry Arnold Dreyer Jr., 72, who co-owned the legendary Dreyer Farms in Cranford, N.J., died Dec. 4, 2015, in Overlook Medical Center, Summit, N.J. There will be no visitation. Private burial is in Fairview Cemetery, Westfield, N.J. A public memorial service will be held at a later date at the First Presbyterian Church in Cranford. Arrangements are by Gray Memorial Funeral Home, Cranford. For online condolences, visit www.grayfuneralhomes.com. At an early age, Henry and his brother, John, joined their parents, the late Henry Sr. and Henrietta, in working at the now century-old farm on Springfield Avenue in Cranford. Thanks to Henry's broad knowledge and love of agriculture, Union County residents have been faithfully buying their plants, fruits, and vegetables there for four generations. Henry Dreyer was especially proud of the quality of the chrysanthemums he produced by the thousands in the farm's numerous greenhouses. Many of the chrysanthemums were bought for large displays at the World Trade Center and Rockefeller Center. Friends fondly recall how Henry spent months before Christmas making countless bows by hand, which adorned wreaths and other holiday decorations sold at the farm. John Dreyer, whose daughter, Jessica Dreyer Costello, is deeply involved in the farm's recent expansion into new consumer service areas, said of his brother, "Farming was Henry's life. He totally enjoyed what he was doing and was proud to be a farmer during the times when being a farmer wasn't as cool as it is today." Born in Elizabeth, N.J., Henry Dreyer spent virtually all of his life in Cranford, and served the community as a township committeeman for several years before being elected to a one-year term as mayor in 1980. Tom O'Brien, a close friend who served as political campaign manager during those years, observed, "Henry was a gentle giant of a man who was a true son of Cranford. He will be remembered for his wit, wisdom, and judgment. He was especially supportive of young people through their rite of passage into adulthood." During the off season, Henry and his wife, Carol, enjoyed vacationing at their home in Longboat Key, Fla., for many years. "Henry cherished those moments when we sat on the lanai having margaritas and watching the sunset," she said. Henry's involvement in agriculture and politics led to service on boards of many groups, including the Cranford Planning Board, New Jersey Soil Conservation Committee, Union County Board of Agriculture, New Jersey Farm Bureau, and the United Counties Trust (now Wells Fargo). A Cranford High School graduate, Henry received a bachelor's degree in political science from Gettysburg College and was a life member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He also did graduate work at East Stroudsburg University. In addition to his wife, Carol Bernard Dreyer, Henry is survived by two sons, Henry A. III and Brett B. and his wife, Nicole; three grandchildren, Shea, Ava, and Teddy Dreyer; and his brother, John Dreyer and his wife, Martha, and their two daughters. He was predeceased by his son Henry's wife, Deirdre O'Connor Dreyer. Contributions in Henry's memory may be made to the Sarcoma Foundation of America.

I remember Henry as man of integrity and deeply in love with Carol and his children and family. I think of Henry and his dad and mom when I go to their farm. I am deeply grateful that the farm still remains, and is a reminder of this lovely family. Isaiah 65;21-22: “And they will plant vineyards and eat their fruitage. And the work of their hands my chosen ones will enjoy to the full...”. There is a promised hope.... (Lois OSullivan)

Hilma and I were shocked and saddened to hear of Henry's death. We recalled the many times we were in his company for Christmas and Holloween parties and smiled at the antics that happened. We were glad to have known him for his wit, love of the farm, and all around good guy.

Dear Carol and Family,

I was shocked to learn today of Henry's death. It's beyond words, something that is truly the saddest news. I can picture Henry on that big tractor going from the farm over to Gallows Hill Road. And his always pleasant manner when he greeted you with a smile at the farm....doing what he loved.

Our condolences to all the family. We will remember Henry for all the contributions he made to Cranford, how he loved his town and his farm.

To the whole Dryer family, please except my condolences on the passing of your husband, dad, uncle, brother, friend. He was a gentle-man bigger then life, who lived ,ran, and built a beautiful part of Cranford 's history. I will miss him riding his tractor on the back streets of Cranford slowing traffic, making me love Cranford that much more to still have a wonderful working farm. Peace, blessing and love from the whole McDonough family.

Henry lived up to the very essence of the job description and words of our Creator to the first man on Earth; "Be fruitful and subdue the the earth. Here I am giving you every seed-bearing plant and every seed bearing fruit." Mr. & Mrs. senior passed along a gift to us all and thus Henry, John, their lovely and dignified wives and children gave Cranford a thriving farm.
There are no words that I can come up with to describe how I feel. I never met anyone who disliked Henry. When the salt of the earth meets the earth, there remains the promise that one day, those in God's memory will return. I love you all, Lois

Worked at the stand for several years and always loved it. Our parents played pinochle together every Tuesday afternoon in the winter time when they were not away. The saved kale after the frost hit so that we had it every Thanksgiving. There were so many great memories thru the years. My prayers will be with you and your family

I worked at Dreyer's as a skinny field hand just out of high school summers and winters for a few years during college. Though that was over forty years ago, my memories of those times are still very sharp. Henry worked right beside us weeding, picking and planting, and answered all four million of my questions about farming and life honestly and kindly. I learned alot about both from Henry and his brother John in those years, and marvelled at their thriving enterprise at a time when Union County was down to its last few farms. They made it look easy. And it wasn't. Hent will always be larger than life to me. His legacy is ensconced in the acres he worked and the greenhouses he tended and the tractors he painted. My sincerest regrets to his family.
