HENRY LAUGHLIN Obituary

LAUGHLIN--Henry R. February 13, 1960 August 6, 2014. Henry Laughlin has passed unexpectedly at his home in San Francisco. Growing up in Norfolk, Connecticut, with roots in Wyoming, he spent time in Argentina and Chile before settling in San Francisco with Carlene, his wife; and there they would later welcome the births of Walker and Amelia, their children. He was currently serving on the board of the Alta Ski Lifts Company in Alta, Utah, the Snake River Associates and Crystal Springs Ranch in Wilson, Wyoming. In Utah, the Andes of Chile and Argentina, the Tetons in Wyoming and the Sierras in California Henry was able to explore his passion for skiing. He enjoyed mountain-biking the trails of Wyoming and the Sierras as well as biking the beautiful roads of the Berkshires. Henry was an accomplished cabinetmaker. Alta benefited from his keen eye for design and perfectionist detail, and he contributed to the major elements in the buildings recently constructed at the Alta Ski Lifts Company. Henry is survived by his brother Paul Laughlin his wife Marian Gram Laughlin and their two sons James R. Laughlin and Hugh O. Laughlin, his sister Leila Laughlin Javitch her husband Daniel Javitch and their two daughters Arielle Javitch and Daphne Javitch. Above all, Henry was an immensely kind man, who gave generously his energy and enthusiasm to help others in need. Even a small gift of his latest discovery showed he had thought of you. So many will miss him not least his beloved dog, Bay. But Henry's own life was not easy. He suffered deeply from mental illness that would not allow him to support his own dreams, even as he supported the dreams of others. Now and in years to come, those who share mental illness such as Henry's will be helped not only by medication and therapy; but also by public awareness and discussion; open empathy with each individual patient, free of shame, prejudice, or judgment of any kind; and rigorous research. Carlene, Amelia, and Walker thank you deeply for contributions made in Henry's name to any organization you feel assists those who suffer from mental disease, such as the National Alliance on Mental Illness (www.nami.org), Bring Change 2 Mind (www.bringchange2mind.org) and ReachOn.org. A celebration in memory of Henry's life will be held at the Swedenborgian Church of San Francisco on September 26, 2014 at 4pm.

Victor Turks, 911 SC Porsche Targa Owner

July 19, 2021

Dear Carlene and Family,
Your beloved husband Henry apologized to me
for rear-ending my Porsche which was parked
in front of my house. Henry left a note on my car
expressing his willingness to pay me an additional
amount - out of his own pocket - for totaling my
Porsche. Eventually Henry sent me a check for
four thousand dollars. He said the Porsche looked good
and was obviously well-taken care of. I thanked Henry
for his kind offer. But not long after this incident,
Henry's wife Carlene told me that Henry had taken his
life. I'd like to express my condolences to the Laughlin
family. My writing teacher Kay Boyle at SF State knew
Henry's father, James. And New Directions published
Kay's collection of short stories, Life Being the Best &
Other Stories. Sorry that my condolences are so late,
but I do want your family to know that you have all
our sympathy and heartfelt compassion for all the
difficult sadness you have had to go through.
Warmly, wishing you the very best,
Victor Turks

I will miss Henry's distance. He never fully engaged, but kept an askance visage. It was refreshing because it gave a sense that he never lost his purity.

I am so sorry to hear this sad news and my heart goes out to Carlene and Walker and Amelia. Henry Laughlin was instrumental in helping a pre-school in San Francisco - Wind in the Willows–buy it's current site on Monterey Boulevard in 1999 and for that we are eternally grateful.
