HERBERT ABRAMOWITZ Obituary

ABRAMOWITZ--Dr. Herbert,

of Whitestone, Queens, a dentist for over 40 years, passed away in his home, Saturday January 31. He had suffered a stroke in 2013. A dentist during the day and a jeweler at night, he is credited with being the creator of "Hypo-Allergenic" jewelry. He held several patents, including the "dri stand", a dental mirror protector, and hypo-allergenic earrings, trademarked the "M.D." post, a slotted hollow earring post of surgical grade stainless steel orthodontic tubing. This development led to other patents including an ear-piercing kit and a compression earring for post- operative keloid surgery. A full line of jewelry was manufactured for this niche market and sold through a mail order business. Born in Bensonhurst on June 28, 1928, Dr. Abramowitz was the only child of Isadore and Pauline Abramowitz. He graduated with a bachelor's and dental degree from New York University. He was a Captain in the Korean War and supervised the dental clinic at Perrin Air Force Base, in Texas. He was truly a renaissance man, fascinated in how "things work and grow". An avid gardener, woodworker, photographer, camera and LP enthusiast, he bred angelfish, and earned degrees in welding and landscaping. He grew prize-winning dahlia flowers in his garden in the tight-knit Saltaire, Fire Island community, where he was known as the "Dahlia King". He was loved for his charming and engaging sense of humor. The adoring husband of Gloria Abramowitz for 58 years, and father of Jody Weisman and Andrew Abramowitz, father-in-law of Andrew Weisman, and grandfather of Hannah, Isabelle and Henry. The family is actively devoted to Kimberton Hills, a non-profit organic, agricultural community in Pennsylvania where his special needs son Andrew lives.

May the peace of God that surpasses all understanding guard your hearts and comfort you during this most difficult time. Psalm 119 : 50,76

My parents, aunt and I were patients of the doctor's from the late '50's to the late '70's. What a wonderful man! I was 6 when we first came under his care, and I always enjoyed the visits. He was so funny and so kind, and I remember in particular his near-obsession with the 1964-65 World's Fair. I lost track of how many times he went, there were so many.
May you be comforted by God's love and the happy memories I know you have.
