HERBERT OPPENHEIMER Obituary

OPPENHEIMER--Herbert Brand, was born March 17, 1924, in Yonkers, NY and died on December 29, 2021, in New York City. Military service in WWII, for which he received a Purple Heart, interrupted his time at Black Mountain College, NC but he continued his education at Columbia University graduating in 1954 with a degree in architecture. Deeply committed to the development of affordable urban housing and restoration, Oppenheimer's distinguished architectural career spanned 60 years. Some of his accomplishments include: the Amsterdam Houses addition on Manhattan's Upper West Side; the Porter Residence in Sharon, CT, which won a National AlA Award; a Jersey City Public Housing Restoration, which was named a ULI Finalist; and, being the 2017 Center for Architecture, Ratensky Lecture Honoree. Oppenheimer took office in 1976 as AIA New York's president. His many community affiliations over the years included the Jewish Board of Guardians, New York City Youth House, and the Century Association. He was married for 65 years to Judith Jordan Oppenheimer and is survived by his three daughters, their partners, and two grandchildren. He was beloved for his community involvement and boundless optimism and practiced wood sculpting at the Arts Student's League until the week of his death. A celebration of his life will be held in the spring. Please call 505-603-2900 for information.
