Hyman Spotnitz, M.D. Obituary

1908 - 2008
Dr. Hyman Spotnitz died of natural causes in Manhattan on Friday, April 18, 2008, at age 99. Dr. Spotnitz, research psychiatrist, neurologist and the founder of Modern Psychoanalysis, was born in Boston. The oldest of five siblings, he grew up in the North End, attended Boston Latin School, and graduated from Harvard College in 1929. He received his M.D. from Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin in 1934. He earned a Doctor of Medical Science degree in Neurology in 1939 at Columbia University P&S. He was certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in 1941. He was married to Miriam Berkman, his childhood sweetheart, until her death in 1977. They had three sons.

Influenced by Sigmund Freud, Dr. Spotnitz believed that psychoanalysis could be extended to cure severe narcissistic disorders that Freud deemed untreatable. Dr. Spotnitz believed schizophrenia was reversible. He felt that failure to treat schizophrenia was due to inadequate methods and not to intrinsic incurability of the condition. He sought a cure in his private practice and in collaborative research and supervision at the Jewish Board of Guardians, where he was consulting psychiatrist. In his book, "Modern Psychoanalysis of the Schizophrenic Patient (1969)," he laid out a theory and technique for the treatment of schizophrenia, formulated from his pioneering clinical research and practice.

Dr. Spotnitz's career included research in neurophysiology at the New York State Neurological Institute and in psychiatry at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. He was Adjunct Psychiatrist at Mount Sinai and the Hospital for Joint Diseases. He was honorary President of the Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies, The Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis and the Mid-Manhattan Institute for Psychoanalysis. His books include "Psychotherapy of Preoedipal Conditions," and, with Phyllis Meadow, Ph.D., "Treatment of the Narcissistic Neuroses." A pioneer in group psychotherapy, he wrote "The Couch and the Circle" in 1961 and co-authored other books aimed at a general audience. He published over 100 articles and was a distinguished supervisor, training analyst, lecturer and group psychoanalyst. In 1988, he received the Sigmund Freud Award from the American Society of Psychoanalytic Physicians. He was a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The American Psychiatric Association honored Dr. Spotnitz in January, 1991 for 50 years of service to the Association and to psychiatry. His videotaped interview, "Conversations with Dr. Hyman Spotnitz on Modern Group Psychoanalysis," was released in 1999.

He lived with his wife, Dorothy Harten Spotnitz until her death in 2007. He is survived by his loving family, Drs. Henry, Alan, and William Spotnitz, Dr. Elizabeth Goldberg, Drs. Sharon Spotnitz, Arlene Bonapace, and Denise Schain, and Mr. Richard Goldberg. He is also survived by his loving grandchildren, Dr. Jennifer Goldberg Goldman, Dr. Michelle Spotnitz, Matthew Spotnitz, Margo Goldberg, Russell Spotnitz, Joanna and Alexander.

A memorial service is being planned. Contributions may be made to the American Neurological Association, Columbia University or Harvard University.

I turn the clocks back to 1955, when I had the enviable opportunity to inhabit the Spotnitz home as "nanny" to three beautiful boys, each so special in the eyes of his parents. I think of them now-Henry, Alan, and Billy-in the loss of their Dad, who treasured them so dearly and nurtured each in his way and wish them sweet memories always. May Dr.Spotnitz's memory be for a blessing.

Dr. Spotnitz was a unique combination of sane and eccentric, decent and brilliant. No one has added more to clinical psychoanalyis than he did. I have been a practicing modern analyst for twenty years and no one has inspired my work as much as he. Greatest sympathy to the family.

My deep condolences to the Spotnitz family for their profound loss. For more than thirty years, half of my life, Dr. Spotnitz shared himself and in certain ways his family with me as I shared myself and my family with him. He was my psychological father, my analyst , teacher and supervisor and I grieve his passing.

My condolences to the Spotnitz family. Dr. Spotnitz was my supervisor for many years. He didn't say much but what he said is still with me. My favorites were "When is our next appointment?" and "You are doing a great job."

My deepest sympathy to both Dr. Spotnitz's family and to the larger Modern Psychoanalytic family. I will never forget as a young analyst watching Dr. Spotnitz demonstrate a "join" with a suicidal patient. I think that it was in that moment that I "got it" and fully embraced the gift of Modern Psychoanalysis. Thank you Dr. Spotnitz for the extraordinary revelations you gave us; they will live on.

To the Spotnitz family: I grieve with you in our mutual loss. I say mutual because since 1974 Dr. S was like a father to me and for all he taught me I am very grateful. For all the love he showed to me I can't find the words to express my feelings. Not only was he a great man in the world, a genius in fact, but he taught us all to be kind and loving to our patients, families, colleagues and friends, as he was. To listen without judgement and to always be thoughtful of the other's thoughts and feelings. I believe he made us all better persons, and we in our turn, are trying to do the same.

I would like to convey my condolences to the family of Dr. Spotnitz. His work as an educator and a pchoanalyst has immeasurably influenced my work and my own life. His ideas about treatment and cure have been transfered to his many patients and supervisees, resulting in reversibility of symptoms in previously unthought of ways. This has enhanced lives and reduced destructive actions and personal suffering. He was a true healer and prophet.

This is on behalf of my mother, who introduced me to Modern Psychoanalysis. If it had not been for Dr Spotnitz I am quite certain that she would not have survived her divorce. She is now a thriving, vibrant analyst, mother, grandmother and woman. Thank you.
