IRA ROTHFELD Obituary

ROTHFELD--Dr. Ira D. Dr. Ira D. Rothfeld, age 91, was a beloved husband, and pillar of New York as a Physician and Honorary Police Surgeon. He was born in Astoria, Queens on March 16, 1932. Ira dedicated his life to the service of others as an eminent New York City otolaryngologist. He attended Tulane School of Medicine, graduating in 1957, after which he interned at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. He served as General Surgical Resident at Tufts, servicing Boston City Hospital, followed by residency in Otolaryngology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. He was Board Certified in 1965. His dedication to others led him to serve in the Air Force Air Command, first at Thulle, Greenland, and then as Chief of the Outpatient Department at Westover Air Reserve Base in M.A. In 1983 he founded the Society of Honorary Police Surgeons of the City of New York, a society dedicated to serving the NYPD and their families. He was the society's first president for 12 years, and remained an Honorary Police Surgeon. He also established a scholarship fund for children of police officers who wanted to enter the field of medicine. An esteemed and dedicated doctor, he opened a private office in Manhattan 33 years ago, and shortly after, opened a second office in Astoria, Queens. He passed away quietly on July 22, 2023, leaving his loving wife Angela.

I, his former patient, was looking up this doctor in order to recommend him to someone and was sad to see he is in heaven now. He was a truly special person. I met him 12 years ago and he solved an issue 3 other doctors couldn“t solve. His office was like a museum and he was so knowledgeable and confident in his craft. I fondly remember his stories of life in Greenland and feeling Instant relief after he performed my surgery. I know he lived a wonderful dignified life and was loved. I hope his legacy continues and that he is happy in heaven.

I just realized that Dr. Ira had passed away about a year ago.
My condolences to his family and professional colleagues.
I fondly remember my visits to his office many years ago.
I found his card and now I will keep it as a reminder of a kind, funny character who always knew what to do.
They should have sent his office to the Smithsonian.
