Jaelitza Ivusic Obituary

JAELITZA--Ms. Born Elaine Ivusic in Boston, MA on December 15, 1930, Jaelitza died December 18, 2023, three days after her 93rd birthday, in Cloverdale, CA while at home under hospice care. She adopted a Serbo-Croatian name some years after visiting her father's family in Croatia, where he was born. A graduate of Simmons College, she went on to accompany her husband, an English professor, to Paris, France, where her first son was born; then to Cairo, Egypt, where 11 months later her second son, William Edgell, who predeceased her in 2022, was born; then to Los Gatos, CA, where she lived when her daughter was born. After a divorce she supported her family by teaching school in Cupertino, CA; starting an alternative school; and working as a teacher and cook at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur for many years. A Francophile, she traveled to and lived in France and at age 72 undertook the pilgrimage Camino de Santiago but suffered the theft of her money and passport along the way. Although living close to nature and adopting a casual West Coast lifestyle, she kept in touch with her East Coast roots by subscribing to The New York Times and The New Yorker magazine. (One of her favorite New Yorker cartoons was of a grey-haired lady sitting in a bar and telling another elderly customer he would not know looking at her that once she was a beauty but that reading The New York Times every day for 60 years had taken its toll!) Throughout her life she was a reader and a steady postcard and letter-writer to family and friends and in later years began keeping a journal. She is survived by her son Christopher Edgell, of Cloverdale; daughter Victoria Edgell, granddaughter Nina Clark and great-grand- daughter Ruby Clark, of Santa Cruz, California; granddaughter Cassandra Cheddar and great-granddaughter Miranda Cheddar, of Aptos, CA; brother Christopher Ivusic of Washington, DC; nephew Sean Ivusic and cousins Tanner and Cora Ivusic, of Poolesville, MD. A memorial service is planned in the summer.

I light up inside thinking of Jae at Esalen in the kitchen where we worked, or out on the deck by the fire pit.
I'm glad to have known you, Jaelitza

She was such a bright & kind woman to me in my years of residency & study at Esalen. I worked in the kitchen with her often. I think of her fondly.

Jaelitza was a wonderful friend and inspiration to me. She looked after my toddler daughter when we lived in Big Sur and instilled a sense of wonder and delight in nature that has left a lifelong imprint. She came and lived with us for a year near Boston where we spent delightful hours working together in the garden and taking care of our flock of chickens. She found and made beauty everwhere she went. I will always cherish the many handmade valentines, socks, handwarmers, and toys she gifted us with. She had an amazing life and will live on in our memories.

Dear Family of Jaelitza
My heartfelt condolences for your loss.
I like to share a moment of my life, the encounter with Jaelitza, which left an imprint on my life to this day.

I met Jaelitza when she was the age I am about now. As a workscholar I came to Gazebo/ Esalen in 1994/95.

Jaelitza gave Gazebo a wholesome and quiet presents. She was one of many Gazebo teachers who would shape my work and broaden my view and knowledge.

Working in her wake has had an influence on my work with youth kids still to this day.

She held her opinions firmly and I never missed her warm welcome and unmistakable twinkle of humor and wise knowledge.

Jaelitza was somebody I could learn from, observing and turn to when needed.
She offered guidance without force.

Jaeliza made an impression which stayed with me all my life. She still appears when I search for "that" wisdom.
She is present when my inner younger is in turmoil.

Jaelitza will continue to stay with me, her contribution, gifting this world with a creative spark, firm presence and warm sense of holding for healing and growing.

Thank you Jaelitza

I worked in the Esalen kitchen with Jaelitza.....each cook decided their menu and I ordered the ingredients, the produce, the meats...whatever was needed for the meal and she created some wonderful meals. Reading her obituary I realize I knew very little about her and always wondered what became of her after she left Esalen. I've thought about walking "the camino" myself and was saddened to read about the theft she endured while on a spiritual pilgrimage. I have only good memories of her! Sending you love and light, dear Jaelitza!

While living at Esalen, every time I met Jaelitza I learned something. She always was so lively, bright and fun. I have wondered about her. May she rest in peace.
