JAMES VINICK Obituary

VINICK--James Eugene. James Vinick, 84, of Longmeadow, MA, passed away on June 10, 2025. Born November 23, 1940, he was the son of Anne and Leonard Vinick. Known affectionately as "Big Jim" to family. Jim led a life defined by boundless energy, success, and service to his community. He was a man of purpose who did things his way--with pride and humor. Jim grew up in Springfield, MA, next to Forest Part. At age 32, he launched a distinguished, 50+ year career in financial services. A disciple of Sandy Weil, Jim began his career in New York City at Shearson, Hammill & Co, and Shearson American Express. He also held leadership roles at Dean Witter Reynolds, Advest Corp., and as Managing Director of Investments Moors & Cabot, Jim appeared for over 20 years on ABC Channel 40 anchor news desk. "The Vinick Report" promoted financial literacy. Jim dedicated more than 60 years of service to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. He served as Treasurer of the Hall, and member of the Board of Trustees and Board of Governors. In 2010, he was awarded the prestigious Chairman's Cup by close friend Jerry Colangelo for his lifelong contributions to the Hall. Until his passing, Jim took great pride in his work alongside John Doleva, President and CEO, and the rest of the team. Jim was a passionate supporter of the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, raising money and awareness in memory of his son Jeffrey and in honor of his daughter Beth. He commissioned a statue of Dr. Farber and "Jimmy" that now stands outside Dana-Farber. He was involved in the Jeffrey Vinick Memorial Golf Tournament for 40 years. Jim received the Bob Cheyne Lifetime Achievement Award. He befriended Red Sox legend Ted Williams and purchased the rights to Ted's life story. Jim shared his love of Ted and the Sox with family and friends. Jim was a Boston University alumnus, where both he and his wife Harriett were multi-sport student athletes. He was part of the building committee of the Boston University Questrom School of Management which opened in 1996. In 2000 Jim was honored as an Outstanding Alumni. In 2013, he was honored as a BusinessWest "Difference Maker" for his efforts throughout Western MA. He was predeceased by his wife Harriett (Thal) Vinick (1984), his son Jeffrey Marc Vinick (1982), and his brother Alan Vinick (2022). He leaves behind his daughter Beth Vinick of Tucson, AZ; grandchildren Brent Hayashi of Tucson, AZ and Darcy Hayashi of South Korea; his son Michael Vinick and wife Stacey Nath-Vinick of Suffield, CT; grandsons Max Vinick of New York, NY and Ty Vinick of Cambridge, MA. He also leaves his dear friend Margie Koft of Farmington, CT. Donations in Jim's memory can be made to The Jimmy Fund, BBHOF or any charitable organization. Funeral service will be held on June 16, 11:00am, at Ascher-Zimmerman Funeral Home, Springfield, MA, with burial at Temple Beth El Cemetery. Shiva will be observed at 74 Prynne Ridge Road, Longmeadow, MA, on the night of the burial and the following evening at 7:00pm.

Jim and my late husband Robert Skip Chernov were partners in Jeffrey Entertainment L.P. Which secured the film rights to Ted Williams' life story. Although I hadn't spoken to Jim in years I have fond memories of him and admired his courage, tenacity and kindness. I regret they didn't get the film made but it came down to the money required by Ted as the deal breaker. The late Treat Williams, a fine actor, was chosen to play Ted.

I don´t remember Jim but we attended the same camp in the early 1950´s. About 4-5 years ago, he found my number and called me to let me know how much my dad meant to him growing up at this camp where our family worked during the summers from `48 thru `58. Jim lived quite the life and that call meant a lot to me in remembrance of my dad. Thank you Jim

Jim was married to my cousin Harriet, and although I didn't know him very well I liked and respected and admired him. I knew him to be smart, considerate, generous, kind, funny, and thoughtful. Great package of traits! We talked occasionally, and those conversations always were a pleasure and interesting. I send condolences to the very many people who care about him.

Jim, was my colleague at ABC40 and LCTV. He led the way in Western MA with excellent financial advice. He worked with Advest 7 in Springfield as a consultant outside his community service. He encouraged me to save my money. I helped him produce his Vinick Report at LCtV. He was with Gill on the new community TV commitee that expanded Longmeadow´s reach. He was really supportive. Condolences to his family.

I was deeply saddened to hear about Jim´s passing. He was not only an exceptional financial advisor, but also a truly compassionate person who genuinely cared about the well-being of the people he served. His expertise gave me peace of mind, but it was his integrity, warmth, and commitment to family values that made the greatest impact. I feel fortunate to have known him, and I hope you find comfort in the legacy of kindness and wisdom he leaves behind. My heartfelt condolences to you and your family.

My condolences to the family of Jim Vinick. Jim was a good friend to me over the years. I learned a great deal from him and he made a big difference in my life. I first met Jim at the Basket Ball Hall of Fame in 2007. He helped me achieve my retirement goals and was always the voice of reason during chaotic times. We frequently talked about our families, politics, sports and the important things in life. I will miss those conversations. Thanks Jim! Rest in Peace.

Jim was a great person. I worked at WGGB in the 1980´s when our GM wanted a financial person on our newscasts and brought in Jim who was never on TV before. So before his debut, we had many rehearsals learning how TV is done. He learned quickly. He was very professional, always getting to studio on time and though he was now a TV star, he always remained humble and kind to everyone. He will be missed. Condolences to his family.

I am the daughter of Lee Williams, the Director of the BBHoF from 1966-1985. My Dad was instrumental in having the original, and second, BBHoF buildings built and its fine reputation established. My dad considered Jim to be a trusted adviser and true partner in all the BBHoF enterprises from the very beginning. And more than that, my dad considered Jim to be like another son. My dad trusted Jim in all ways financial and personal. My own family has had the pleasure of having Jim as our trusted financial advisor for 35 years. We will certainly miss Jim and thank him for his life of service and unselfishness. Blessings to him and to his beloved family. Mary Jo Martell and family

Jim was one of the smartest people I know. When it came to finance, he was number one. We would speak at length about the state of the economy and where he thought interest rates were going. He knew the bond market better than anyone. I will miss him and so will the community.

Michael,

May the strong memory of our grandparents, from their meager beginnings, playing cards together, and working hard, allowing us to flourish in this life, bring you solace that everything is possible.

Your father was emblematic of what is possible with perseverance and grit to become a leader in the community and leave it a better place!

I know he is seated at the big boardroom, in heaven, guiding the angels. May his soul rest in grace for it is well deserved!

Sending my friend prayers and blessings during this difficult time.
