JEFFREY STEIN Obituary

STEIN--Dr. Jeffrey Alan, was born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1940 to Max and Bertha Stein. After graduating from Harvard College and Harvard Medical School, he practiced Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology for over 50 years at New York-Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, where he was an Emeritus Professor of Medicine. Respected by colleagues and adored by patients for his expert care and thoughtful bedside manner, Dr. Stein saved countless lives and healed thousands more. Dr. Stein, also known to family and friends as "Poppy" and "Doc," is survived by his wife Diane H. Schafer, children Jonathan and Pamela Frankel Stein, Sara (Stein) and Mark Richman, and brothers Ethan and Matthew Stein. He also leaves behind five grandchildren: Jacob, Eliot, Abigail Stein, Lindsay, and Jessica Richman. His greatest passions were his family, practicing medicine, teaching medical students, playing tennis, reading, and chocolate. A memorial service will be planned at a future date. Donations in his honor can be made to the Alzheimer's Association and Caring Kind.

Dr. Stein was both my doctor and my mother's doctor for many, many years. He was truly one of a kind....caring, thorough and professional with a wonderful bedside manner. We loved him dearly and he will truly be missed by his family, patients, and colleagues. May he rest in peace.
