I was the flower girl at cousin Joan’s wedding to Marvin in 1960. Very few women were architects when Joan entered the field, but it was what she wanted to do and she did it, with great success. As I grew older, I got to know and really appreciate her work ... her concern for communities and context is as obvious as her intellectual skill in her architectural projects. I also remember her personal sense of style, wide variety of interests, and active support of civil rights and social justice. Joan was a role model to me before I’d ever heard that word, and she always will be.

She will be sorely missed. I valued her insight and guidance.
