Joan-Joy Sutton McCarthy Obituary

1946 - 2013
Joan-Joy Sutton McCarthy (Hebrew Name Sara) was born in New York, NY on September 25, 1946, the youngest of child of Marie and Sydney Sutton, sister to Leonard and John Otto Sutton. Joy was the dynamic mother of Jennifer-Joy Bronk and Charles Sydney McCarthy. She was also aunt to Tamara Sydney Sutton.

Joy worked as a school teacher for nearly five decades, having started her career teaching severely mentally retarded children in Harlem, NY. After studying at Hofstra, NYU and Columbia, she earned her Specialist in Education degree in nutrition as it related to severely retarded children. She continued her career as a highly respected teacher at Miami Carol City Senior High in Miami, FL.

With a deep appreciation for the arts, Joy often took her children to the theater and fine museums in order to foster a comprehensive understanding of its importance in their lives. She continued to do so for her granddaughters, Gabriela Lynn and Annaka-Joy, whom she loved dearly.

Her unencumbered wild side was much appreciated by her son, Charles. Joy and Charles often took Zachary and Gavin out to enjoy sports, running and bicycling. They continued to instill the importance of creating nurturing environments by spending quality time reading together.

Joy was a loving and generous woman who gave everything she had to those in need, truly embodying the spirit of Tikkun Olam. From her passion as the coach of the school's Special Olympics team to a her dedication as the coach of the Chess team, Joy was a brilliant, compassionate soul who cared a great deal about the world around her.

I Love You Miss McCarthy!! You and your family found favor in me and gave me tools to be a tough chess competitor and the confidence to be a diligent student. Every game I play, from this point, I dedicate to your shining star. When I look up, I will see your beautiful smile shining on me. It's been a long time Jennifer and Charles, but I have not and never will forget you all. Please take comfort in knowing that your mom is always with you, even unto now. When your noses grace the sweet odor of flowers; when your keys mysteriously end up in an uncommon place; or when you hear the peaceful rustlings of leaves and the mellifluous singing of birds while taking nature walks, know that she is with you as your guardian angel. I can think of no other suitable time & space she'd want to take as a heavenly energy, other than being by your sides in perpetuity... For she was truly a guardian angel for many young people here on Earth, including me. I miss and love you all so much, but I know one day our paths will cross once again . God be with you all!!

Jennifer & Charles,
I am sorry you lost your mother at such a young age. She was a unique and dynamic person and was very proud of her talented children.
