JOHN BRITTON Obituary

BRITTON--John P., beloved father, grandfather, husband, brother and distinguished scholar of Babylonian astronomy and the history of science, died of cardiac arrest on June 8th. He was 71. John was born in Hartford, CT. He attended St. Paul's School and spent ten years at Yale University where he received a B.A. and a Ph.D. in the History of Science and Medicine for his work studying ancient mathematics and astronomy. After school he moved to West Hartford, where he lived for more than 20 years with his first wife Kathryn Lines Britton, raising his family and working in a variety of roles in the investment management business. He joined Conning & Company in 1966, became partner and later left to found CF Management, an asset management firm. In his last two decades, John returned his focus to the study of ancient astronomy, and made a number of notable contributions to the field. His early study of the precision of the models in Ptolemy's Almagest was followed by numerous works that formed a comprehensive exploration of the origins of exact science. In 1995 he married Claudine Vincente Britton and in 1997 they moved to Wilson, WY. John charmed the lives of his friends and family with his mischievous, contrarian sense of humor, his deep intellect and his wide-ranging interests in politics, financial markets, science, arts, and history. He served on the Board of Trustees of the Wadsworth Atheneum and a number of corporate boards and worked with St. Paul's School to improve mathematics education. John also had a lifelong passion for the outdoors. He enjoyed rock climbing, skiing, and hiking for most of his 71 years and introduced both his sons and grandchildren to the outdoor life. He is survived by his wife, Claudine Britton of Wilson, WY; his sons John Britton of New York, NY and Sam Britton of San Francisco, CA; his brother Peter Britton of South Hamilton, MA; and four grandchildren.

I am so sorry to learn of John's passing. I came to meet and know him through his late father, John D., and his brother, Peter, with whom I was privileged to have worked in water development. my and my family's condolences and expressions of sympathy go to his widow and his sons, his brother, Peter, and his entire family. may his spirit be surrounded with light.

Mr. Britton was a true mentor to me when I first started out in the Insurance Industry over 30 years ago. My interactions with him and his associate Day at C.F. Management were always thought provoking, intelligent and interesting. He was an extremely intelligent man that had a heart of gold. My day just got a lot sadder knowing now that "Mr. B" is no longer with us. My deepest condolences to his family.

Dear Claudine, Sam, John and familyhi:
I am shocked. It seems only a while back we were rock climbing together. We lost touch since I remarried. I so enjoyed many things about John - his humor, outdoor skills, fun. I used replicas of his cuneiform tablets in my elementary classroom. I am so sorry. He'll be missed.
What a loss.
Fondly,
Deborah Twombly

Dear Claudine, John, Sam and Peter,
I was deeply saddened to hear of John's passing. We became such good friends over the 20 years I worked for him at Conning and C F Management. I knew the pride he had in his sons, whom I watched grow up into fine young men. I learned so much from John..he was brilliant and compassionate, and funny. You are all in my prayers at this very sad time. With sincerest condolences. Day

John had the perfect blend of an amazing intellect and the wide eyed willingness of a child to constantly explore and discover. That will be something that will forever be a lasting memory for me. It is rarity that you can meet someone who truly changes your life in many ways. John was a teacher, a student, a friend and will be missed.
