JOHN CHANG Obituary

CHANG--John B., M.D.,

Vascular surgeon and educator, died on December 1 in Great Neck, NY at 79. Dr. Chang was one of the best-known and most respected vascular surgeons in the world. He was the founder and director of the Long Island Vascular Center in Roslyn, NY. Dr. Chang trained at Seoul National University and immigrated to the United States in 1967, with his beloved wife Lucy. He completed his U.S. surgical residency and vascular training at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New York. His surgical skills and deep caring for patients resulted in a blossoming clinical and surgical practice, culminating in the care of tens of thousands of patients from 1973 to 2015. His expertise with the surgical procedure of carotid endarterectomy remained unsurpassed. Dr. Chang trained hundreds of surgery residents, many of whom went on to leadership positions. His residents held him in great esteem, not only for his clinical skills and surgical teaching, but also for his caring, generosity, and mentorship. Dr. Chang was a perceptive and talented individual of great integrity who inspired everyone to live up to his standards of fairness, compassion, and respect for his patients which he demonstrated throughout his career. Dr. Chang lectured throughout the world, published over 150 scientific articles, and authored the comprehensive textbook Angiology. He held academic appointments at Hofstra Northshore-LIJ School of Medicine and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Chang served as Chairman of the Board of the International College of Angiology for decades, a labor of love that brought together colleagues from around the world and was also their journal's Editor-in-Chief. He organized countless conferences and symposia worldwide and founded the Asian Vascular Society. He was the President of the Honorary Society of Police Surgeons for the New York Police Department and strongly supported the Catholic Church culminating in his Elevation to Grand Cross, Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. Dr. Chang was a devoted and loving husband, father, brother, uncle, and grandfather. He is predeceased by his father and mother and survived by four younger brothers, his sister, a large extended family; his wife Lucy, his sons Victor and Robert, and his three grandchildren; countless friends and colleagues; and thousands of loving, grateful patients. Friendship and family were highly valued by John Chang. His caring and respect for his patients encouraged many loving connections to develop and branch out like the limbs of a tree. These relationships lasted for a lifetime. He dedicated his life to being the finest doctor, surgeon, educator, leader, humanitarian, friend, and family man that he could be. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Donations may be made to the International College of Angiology - John B. Wonderful person. Helped make the world a much better place. He dedicated his life to reduce suffering in world that can be very cruel and unforgiving. May he find peace and happiness in the next world that will certainly reward him for all his wonderful deeds.

Today on Thanksgiving, isolated in the times of COVID, I am reminded of my first Thanksgiving in America. A new immigrant refugee from the Apartheid Government. 1979. I was in Great Neck - just started working at LIJ - my family was back in Cape Town. I did not see them for a year until I could find a rental house and the money for tickets and the US paperwork. I was invited to a Thanksgiving Dinner by the Vascular Surgeon, John & Lucy Chang (Seoul). They were so warm, inviting, gentle and kind. No Americans invited me. Traditional Turkey and watch football. I did not know what Thanksgiving was. I did not understand American Football. I did not know anyone. They were watching on a big screen - the old one that was a projector so that you could not see from the side. 41 years ago. A lot has passed under the bridge since then. I now understand American Football. Dr Chang, I will never forget your kindness and how you made me feel welcome in this massive and strange land, even with my Ellis Island certificate on the wall.

Dr John was a True Humanitarian. He not only saved my Dads life he saved so many others. The love he had for his patients and dedication surpass any doctor I have ever met. We were truly blessed by God to have him with us and my heart is breaking for his family that he did not get to retire with his wife. Gone to soon, but definitely sitting next to our Lord and Savior now. I used to call him the Ever Ready Bunny Rabbit. His energy was endless. Rest in Peace Dear Godfather, Love Chris's daughter your brother

Though I know Dr. Chang only through a mutually close friend, and not directly, when an outstanding person as this passes, it is a great loss to all of us, past, present and still unborn.

So saddened by the loss of such a brilliant surgeon and caring, loving doctor. He was my husband's doctor who not only saved his life, but went out of his way years later when my husband was at the end of his life, to do everything he could to make his last days comfortable. He was always there for us at every twist and turn. He jokingly called my husband Inspector Callahan and I know that today they are with each other again in Heaven. Dr. Change, rest in peace; you were the best.

Remembering a Wonderful Man Dr. Chang. As I see it Dr. Chang has lived and was there for everyone, no matter at what life's length. By looking on the brighter side, he found his inner strength for helping everyone with their vascular problems like my Mom, Sarah. Dr. Chang takes whatever time he has and lived for all he's worth, spreading love and happiness to others here on earth. He laughed a little more, cared a little more and showed through his example, just what life is for. Although we miss him now when he's gone. What stories we can tell of how Dr. Chang made a difference by simply living life well. He who loved life and lived it fully, teach us, inspire us, and showed us how to leave behind lasting gifts to the world. With Warm Memories to his family, friends and everyone who worked with him in the office. Dr. Chang, you were an inspiration to us all and you'll be sadly missed. God Bless.

I was fortunate to have worked in the Operating Room with John Chang in the 1980s. First as an OR Tech by his side and later as an RN. I can't even find the words to describe how respected this man was. Not only was he a talented and gifted surgeon, but also had a kind and gentle heart. He had a knack for teaching his team how to best support him and inspired those around him to present their best possible self. All of this, not for himself, but for his patients.

My condolences to the family and those close to him. This is a great loss to them and to the medical community.

Rest in peace, my friend. You will never be forgotten.

He is one of many wonderful surgeons serving the NYPD so generously. He is truly a role model to all of us. The world is now a better place because of his presence and gifts he bestowed upon us all.

I was a patient of Doctor Chang . He was the loveliest man. As a doctor he was brilliant and skilled. He saved my father's life and cared for him for decades. Because of Dr. Chang my father lived to see great grandchildren and his 90th birthday.
My heartfelt condolences to his family. My parents were Irving and Jeanette Weinberg. My father, a retired baker, always brought his cookies for the Changs. I hope the memories of such a caring man helps you find strength during this difficult time.

I knew Dr Chang at LIJ back In the 70s where I was a nurse on 5 north. In addition to being a gifted Surgeon, he was always kind and collegial with the nurses. I sent a patient to him years ago who was able to keep his leg because of Dr Chang's interventions
