JOHN A. DEVRIES

DeVRIES--John A. (Jack), 90, died on September 14, 2013 at home in Essex Fells, NJ. A Funeral Mass will be offered in Notre Dame Church, North Caldwell on September 18 at 10am. Visiting in the Prout Funeral Home, 370 Bloomfield Avenue, Verona, NJ on Tuesday from 4 to 7pm. He served during WWII as a Naval Officer and had both BS and MS degrees in Engineering from the University of Notre Dame. Mr. DeVries was a Consultant and authority in the field of online, computerized lotteries, lottery operational issues and race-track wagering systems. He served as Chairman of the American Totalisator Company, was Senior Vice President and Group executive for the Data Systems and Worldwide Wagering Group of General Instrument Corporation. He also served as Executive Vice President of the Autotote Corporation, and as Chairman and CEO of Computer Applications Inc., which developed programs for NASA and many Fortune 500 Corporations. Mr. DeVries was one of the founding members of Notre Dame Parish in North Caldwell. Jack was the beloved husband for 67 years to the late Irene DeVries, the loving father of John A. DeVries, Jr., Karen A. Smith, Janet Rooney, Brian DeVries, Michael DeVries and the late William DeVries. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations to Alzheimer's Association or Notre Dame Church would be appreciated.
