He sailed on the USS Adroit, an Acme-class minesweeper, visiting Cuba, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas in the Caribbean, and Nova Scotia. He was proud of his military service. Later he drove a tangerine Jensen- Healy and finally a Mercedes Benz coupe. He kept his cars in good condition for many years. In Indianapolis he worked in retail for the two leading department stores, L.S. Ayres Company and the William H. Block Company. He later moved to New York City where he lived most of his adult life. For many years he worked for La Lame, where he specialized in high quality fabrics and trims, and serviced the fashion industry and the ecclesiastic and military communities. John liked to paint and was a supporter of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art. He also was a donor to a great variety of charities supporting animal welfare, the environment, human rights, and veterans. He was a serious recycler and an avid sports fan. John also liked to travel the world, often with family. England, Germany, Hong Kong, Kenya, Mexico, Northern Ireland, the Philippines, Scotland and Thailand were just some of his destinations.
