John Liebmann Obituary

LIEBMANN--John E., 88 years old, died May 30th, 2008 at home. Beloved husband of Ellin Tiefenthal Liebmann for 64 years, devoted father of Kathryn and John Jr.; wonderful father-in-law of Milagros Santiago Liebmann and step-grandfather of Elvin Flores. John, a native New Yorker attended Lincoln School in Manhattan where he made lifelong friends. He graduated from Brown University in 1941 and enlisted shortly thereafter in the US Army serving as an officer in the 272nd Field Artillery Battalion in Europe where he was awarded the Bronze Star. From 1946-1964 he worked at Liebmann Breweries, brewers of Rheingold Beer. Later he was for many years Director of the New York Office of the Brown University Development Department where he played a major role in the University's first large capital campaign. For more than 60 years he was a loyal and distinguished alumnus in a variety of volunteer and staff roles. He also assisted Tougaloo College in Jackson, Mississippi with their fundraising. In retirement he volunteered with the Court Monitors program through the Manhattan District Attorney's Office and was a longtime student at Marymount College. He lived a life of "usefulness and reputation." In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Police Athletic League or Brown University.

John, in his role as Mr. Brown in New York City, was a significant factor in my life in the early 70's when I finished graduate school. Aside from his work running the Development Office, he was a mainstay of the Brown Club in New York. He was the last survivor of the move to the WNRC; Art Thibodeau, Ann and Chuck Bradley, Betty Babb, arnd Ward Jackson are all long gone. I so looked forward to seeing John every 5 years at Reunion in Providence.

John was a great friend. I always looked forward to seeing him at Brown reunions. I was class of '71. He was class of '41. So we always reuned together. I will miss his cheery smile and always cheerful attitude. May God keep and hold him forever.
