Leonard Eisenbud Obituary

Eisenbud, Leonard died peacefully at 91 on November 30 in Haverford, PA. Beloved husband of the late Ruth-Jean, father of David, cherished by Monika, Daniel, and Alina Eisenbud, Annette Rubinstein, Lucille Rhodes and her family, Robert and Philip Rhodes and their families, and Shannon. Lifelong student of science and its culture, he wrote "Nuclear Structure" with Eugene P. Wigner, which became a standard text translated in many languages. He was also known for his penetrating analysis of the meaning of Newton's Laws. Honored for wartime work on radar but then barred from academic work during the McCarthy era, he later helped found, and chaired, the world-renowned physics department at SUNY Stony Brook, where he taught from 1957 to 1983, and was honored by his students with distinguished teaching awards.
