I knew and worked with Les in the 1970's when I was a lawyer acting for the Rockefeller interests and Les worked for David Rockefeller's private office. He was a good man to work for, carefully explaining what was needed, well prepared with back-up papers and financial analysis, and always ready to share a story with a glimpse of his life. One such story was of his time in the navy while in the Mediterranean Sea. Soviet ships did not follow the rules about yielding when two ships were on a collision course, resulting in ships playing a game of Cold War chicken. Once when Les' ship was on a collision course and the Soviet ship refused to veer, Les' commander kept his course and ordered everyone on ship to brace for a collision. The Soviet commander finally yielded.
We lost contact with each other when I moved to England but gladly, for both of us, we met in London in 2014 after a very long separation. It was if the years had never passed. I was touched nearly to tears when he said to me at the end of our meeting that he didn't want to lose me as a friend again. I pray that Les may rest in peace.
