LEWIS KADEN Obituary

KADEN--Lewis. Davis Polk mourns the loss of our dear friend and former partner Lew Kaden. Our deepest sympathies are with the Kaden family. A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School, Lew clerked for the Hon. J. Edward Lumbard of the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. He joined Davis Polk in 1982 and became a partner in 1984, focusing on corporate governance and M&A matters and advocacy before appellate courts including the U.S. Supreme Court. He retired in 2005 to join Citigroup as Vice Chairman, and later returned to the firm as Senior Counsel. Lew will be greatly missed by the entire Davis Polk community.

What can anyone say about Lewis ! His accomplishments so so many and yet he was just a regular guy in school. He was kind and he was so easy to speak with yet we all knew his intelligence was far surpassed ours. To know Lewis was to love him and this world has lost a great person. My sincere sympathy to Ellen and family.

Nancy and I were shocked to learn about Lew's sudden death and we grieve with his family. Lew was my friend and colleague during the years with Governor Brendan Byrne where we worked together to elect Byrne to two terms and served with him for eight years to serve the people of New Jersey. Our deepest heartfelt condolences to Lew's family. He will be sorely missed.

What a loss! ... of one of he few truly "great and good." We were classmates and friends in college, law school, and alumni ventures ... for many years. I just hope he knew how much I admired him - across the board - and how grateful I am that he brought me along. May he rest in peace ... And with condolences to Ellen and the Kaden progeny. I knew Lewis from our days at rival high schools, I was at Woodbridge High and he was at Perth Amboy. We had many mutual friends although our schools were highly competitive football and sports rivals during those days. Although we lost touch over time, he was always one I cherished as a true friend from my teenage years. My deepest condolences to his family, who sound wonderful, by the way.

An excellent friend from 60 years and a little ago. Lew "starred" in a full-length play of mine in college more or less as a favor to me. His dad Ruby once got me a ride from Perth Amboy to Washington, DC with one of his truckers. I worked day and night (for a few days) on Lew's congressional campaign. A couple of months ago he called more or less out of the blue and we had the sweetest time reminiscing for about a half hour or more. It made me very happy to hear from him.

I'm an old friend and fellow-warrior from the public life of Lew's career. Can someone send me Ellen's home address so I can write her a note?

All best,

As part of the Executive Protection detail in Citigroup, It was my responsibility to insure he was transported daily safely. He was a kind, honorable family man who truly will be missed by all who knew him. He always treated me with dignity and respect as his family did. I personally mourn his passing.
