LIDYA BUZIO Obituary

BUZIO--Lidya. Artist and ceramist, died of cancer on September 30, 2014 at her Greenport, Long Island home at age 65. Buzio's work was widely acclaimed in the ceramics field and was seen in major museum exhibitions across the country. Inspired by the buildings and skyline of lower Manhattan, her most noted ceramic vessels combining cylinders, cones, and hemispheres twist and juxtapose the rooflines, architectural details, and water towers of the city into a magical panorama that captures the urban scene. Born in Uruguay, in 1948, she studied with artists of the Taller Torres-Garcia in Montevideo. Buzio moved to New York City in 1971. In the 1990s, she moved to the North Fork of Long Island. Buzio's ceramics are in the Brooklyn Museum, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Smithsonian National Museum of American Art in Washington, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, the Nelson-Atkins Museum, the Everson Museum, the Victoria & Albert in London, many other museums and private collections. She is survived by her sister, Cecilia de Torres, her brothers Carlos and Julio Buzio, her husband Dan Pollock, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

I forgot that Lidya died in September, but I always remember her birthday on October 13th. She was a friend that was rather just family --and missed.

Lidya Buzio: wonderful artist, faithful childhood friend, always open to poetry, music and the beauty of nature. She loved animals and children, but she left us waiting for the miracle that would bring her back. Ingrid Tempel, Paris

Every time I go to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London I remember that one of Lidya's wonderful resonating pieces is there. 1983 she made it, I think. I recall talking to her about the juxtaposition of real form with virtual forms. Her pieces grew more abstract in recent years-How could she possibly know how the colors would turn out, after her ceramics would come out of the kiln? It was such a science with her. When she lived underneath my apartment eons ago, we would often talk over coffee while I watched her do this old, almost meditational, burnishing technique. To my knowledge, she never would use glaze. . . . Well this is all water under the bridge. Her work is ever more appreciated, and more to the point, it's a loss! I miss an old dear wonderful friend! And I know her absence is truly felt by all her close family and friends.

I am so sorry for the family's loss. God promises there will be no more sickness and death. May she rest in His memory until that day. John 5:25

Cecilia & Dan,

I was devastated to read about Lydia's death this morning, and full of regret that I'd not managed to stay in touch over the years and didn't know she was ill. My thoughts go out to you both. I feel lucky to have known her and to have felt her creative spirit so powerfully.

Love, Bill
