LILLI SHEDLIN Obituary

SHEDLIN--Lilli (Arons)

Philanthropist, devoted wife, Holocaust survivor was born January 23, 1921 in Berlin, Germany to Heinz Arons, a physician, and Meta Arons, a decorated nurse in the German army during WWI. She was part of a well established banking family and a great niece of Gershon Bleichroeder, Bismarck's financial advisor. Lilli escaped the Holocaust with her family by walking over the Alps to France. Lilli completed her education in Paris at the Lycee and the Sorbonne. The Vichy Government forced her father Heinz and brother Ernest into a camp. The Mayor of Vichy got the family visas to leave France, Lilli, her sister Eva, and mother went to Marseilles where the family reunited and went to the United States. Lilli met and married her first husband, Lou Nathan, with whom she had two daughters, Leslie and Carol. The great joy and love of her life was her marriage to Allan Shedlin, to whom she was a constant companion, devoted partner, and muse until his passing in 2002. Lilli had a fine, artistic, European style, a keen and cutting wit, a joie de vivre and a fierce sense of self. Lilli and Allan worked tirelessly for the American Cancer Society, Easter Seals, and Fed Cap among other charities. Lilli is survived by her sister, Eva Wolff, two daughters, Leslie Nathan Weinberger (Daniel) and Carol Nathan McKegney; as well as grandchildren, Collin Weinberger, Kathryn McKegney and Alison McKegney. She is also survived by Allan's sons, Victor and Allan Junior, their children, Gary, Karen, and Lauren; Raya, Samantha, and Christina; their spouses and children. In accordance with her wishes, there will be no services. In her honor, please donate to one of her charities.

Funny, earlier today Lilli came vividly to mind. I remembered her kindness and generosity over the years to REEL FATHERS, the nonprofit that Allan and I started to help make the experience of fatherhood a rewarding one for men, their children and families. Lilli's early support was key to our success. I miss our phone conversations when she would listen cheerfully to my reports. Her spirit is very much with us.

On this anniversary month of your passing, may you always be remembered for your grace, kindness and strength.
You brought love and hope to so many who had been without it.

Dear Lilli, mother of my beloved Leslie,
What liveliness and grace you radiated, and what gifts you gave to the world in your daughters. Such vitality. You were a grand daughter to your own mom, and showed all us women new ways to age. What a model. Thank you. Bless you. Flowers and candles and the very best champagne to you.

One of the greatest people I have known; grace, kindness, beauty and compassion personified. Thank you, Lilli, for all you have done and for sharing so much of yourself and Allen with others. I will always remember your assistance to Easter Seals and the trip you and Allen made to NH to receive an award.

I'm grateful to have known Lilli. With her stepson Allan Jr. I founded the nonprofit REEL FATHERS. Its purpose is to promote a positive experience of fatherhood for fathers, children and families through an innovative use of story told through videos, movies and poetry. Through the Allan Shedlin Foundation, Lilli was our original donor and a generous supporter throughout the past 9 years. I enjoyed every encounter with her. She had a knowing twinkle in her eye that I will always remember. I was inspired by her fortitude and grateful for her generosity. Blessings on her spirit.
