LOUIS MATTIS Obituary

MATTIS--Louis P., "Lou," 68, of Carbondale, CO passed away on Wednesday July 14, 2010 following a courageous battle with cancer. He was 68. He will be remembered for his compassion, generosity, integrity and the difference he made in many lives. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Mattis retired in 1994 as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Winthrop Inc., a worldwide developer, manufacturer and marketer of pharmaceuticals and consumer health products. He was also Co-Chairman of Sanofi Winthrop, a global pharmaceutical joint venture. He participated in the design and implementation of major corporate mergers, led several international joint ventures and the conceptualization and execution of a Four billion multinational alliance between Sterling and Sanofi, which was the first of its kind in the industry. In 1993 "Pharmaceutical Executive" magazine named him "Pharmaceutical Executive of the Year" and The A.B. Freeman School of Business at Tulane University voted him "Outstanding Alumnus". He served as a director of Salomon Brothers Asset Management and on a number of corporate, association, non-profit and philanthropic boards including chairing The Advisory Board of the A.B. Freeman School of Business at Tulane University; Governor of The Center For Creative Leadership; Honorary Chairman of the Special Olympics; Partner in the New York City Partnership; and member of The National Council for Health Education, The Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association and The Non-Prescription Drug Manufacturers Association. Following his retirement, he found joy in raising and riding his horses on his ranch in Carbondale, CO and in diving in Belize but he found his greatest joy in the company of his family. He is survived by his wife of six years, Judy, his children Ted Mattis (Sally), Debbie Collier (Bill), his seven grandchildren, his sister Salli White (David) his nephews, and former wife, Patsy Cuthbert. A service celebrating his life was held at his home in Carbondale on July 16, 2010. The family has requested that in light of Lou's dedication to the health and welfare of children, memorials may be sent to Children's Tumor Foundation 95 Pine Street, 16th Floor New York, NY 10005 or Holy Cross Anglican School, San Pedro, Ambergris Cay, Belize, Central America.
