MANFRED ARNOLD Obituary

ARNOLD--Manfred W. Manfred Wilhelm Arnold passed away on May 18, 2022 at the age of 83 in Westfield, NJ. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather. Manfred was born in Wilhelmshaven, Germany on September 4, 1938 to Wilhelm and Willma Arnold. He was joined by his siblings Jurgen and Ingrid who preceded him in death. In 1963, Manfred boarded a company ship and left for America to work in the ship-owner's New York office. In December of that same year, he met his lovely future wife, Susan Greenhouse. They fell in love and quickly became inseparable. When Manfred's job took him to Japan in 1964, he wrote to Susan asking her to join him in Japan to be his wife, and they were married later that year. The newlyweds traveled the globe and returned to the United States in 1965. They welcomed daughters, Heidi and Kirsten, and settled into family life in Westfield, NJ. Manfred had a distinguished career in the maritime industry that took him to all corners of the globe. After working for several shipping companies in the 1970s and 1980s, Manfred started his own maritime arbitration company, Westmarine; and was a leader within the maritime arbitration community, serving five terms as the president of the Society of Maritime Arbitrators, Inc. New York. Recently, one of his amicus briefs was cited in a Supreme Court case. Manfred had a zest for life, and his passion was exemplified in his love of collecting: art and antiques, Chinese snuff bottles, fine wine, rare and first edition books and bibles. Manfred loved to travel, experience new cultures, and enjoy fine food. He loved soccer, especially Bayern Munich, and was a lifelong Rangers hockey fan. Manfred was a devotee of The New York Times and took great pride in completing the Sunday puzzle in ink. He was always surrounded by music, from opera to Elvis and collected trad jazz and blues albums and posters. As a family, they enjoyed time with family and friends in the Poconos, playing tennis and golf, and going for walks, as well as landscaping the woods. He is survived by his wife, Susan, of 57 years; his daughters, Heidi Arnold of Washington, DC and Kirsten Pickel of Scotch Plains, NJ; and three grandchildren: Elisabeth, Owen, and Molly Pickel. The family will have a small private ceremony to celebrate his life. 'Opa' was our rock, our constant in every adventure and at every turn. He was a source of strength and a role model unlike any other, always equipped with a German expression to remedy any situation. It was an honor to be your wife, daughter, grandchild and we will miss you terribly. Donations in his honor may be made to the Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 356, West- field, NJ 07091. www.westfield rescuesquad.org/donate/

Marion joins me in sending our sincere condolences to Susan and family.

Manfred in many ways epitomised maritime arbitration in New York and globally. He was a true professional and a real gentleman.

He and I shared platforms as speakers at many conferences and seminars and I greatly enjoyed working with him during my time as Chairman of the ICMA Steering Committee.

He will be sorely missed.

Our sincerest condolences to Susan, Heidi, Kirsten, Elisabeth, Owen and Molly.

Manfred will be greatly missed. He was a mentor, advisor and true friend.

Remembering good times, here is a photo of Susan and Manfred from the Hong Kong ICMA in 1994. The photo was taken on the Congress' ferry ride in the harbor.
