MARC BECKER Obituary

BECKER--Marc Evan. Marc Evan Becker, beloved husband, adored father, loving son, amazing brother, fabulous uncle, devoted friend and warrior mensch passed away Monday morning having fought a courageous battle against pancreatic cancer. He was 51 years old. Marc lived every day to the fullest and taught all those blessed to be in his circle of love and life what it means to appreciate each day, to live with integrity and to share the blessings of our lives in service to others. Born into the loving home of Sharon and the late Jerry Becker, Marc graduated from John Glenn High School, Elwood, NY going on to attend the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. Having begun his career at Smith Barney, Marc joined Apollo in 1996 where he worked for 27 years as a partner, mentor, trusted friend and colleague. Marc was fiercely devoted to his community. A proud Jew, Marc led Park Avenue Synagogue as chairman. In addition to his lifelong commitment to University of Pennsylvania as chair of Penn First Plus, Marc served as chairman to TEAK - a NYC- based program helping talented students from low- income families achieve their potential. Above all, Marc was most proud of his family, the center of his world. He is survived by his beloved wife, Caryn, and his children, Olivia, Willow and Hayden. Marc will be lovingly remembered by friends and family, including his mother, Sharon, (Jerome z'l), his brother, Scott (Melissa), his sister, Lisa (Ken) Lipner, his mother-in-law, Laurie Malden, and his sister-in-law, Rona (Lou) Fromm. Donations can be made in honor of Marc's memory to Park Avenue Synagogue, Penn First Plus or TEAK. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at 11:00am at Park Avenue Synagogue. 50 E. 87th Street.

Thoughts from Florida. Marc gave me guidance and counsel over the years that was so meaningful to me and my family. He always spoke to highly of his beautiful family.

As a Class 14 TEAK Fellow, Marc's impact is still felt to this day. I remember going to a sit-down restaurant for the first time as a 7th grader at the Hard Rock Cafe and meeting Marc for the first time - I didn't know much about the TEAK board, but I could tell Marc cared about us deeply. Then, when I graduated high school, he gave a wonderful speech and gifted the book Give and Take by Adam Grant to our class. He spoke about the importance of giving as we were on our way into the 'real world.' Now that I'm a college graduate and a few years into the workforce, I can't help but think about Marc and all the sacrifices he made with his intensive work schedule and all the love he poured into TEAK. I am now getting more involved in TEAK as an alumni - if Marc was able to give generously with an infinitely busier schedule, then so can I!
May his memory be a blessing.

We watched the funeral services for Marc remotely and were captivated by Caryn and the children’s tearful reflections. Add to that the memories of Marc’s wonderful friend’s, and you have the mirror image of a renaissance man. Our love and condolences go out to Caryn, Willow, Olivia and Hayden, and to Sharon, Lisa and Scott.

Marc was a great soccer player and an awesome student. He took Hebrew school so much more seriously than I did. I can still see him in my mind's eye, some 40-odd years later, sitting alertly in the front row, last seat on the right side, while I was in the back trying (futilely) to flirt with Lauren Richman, Denise Cohen, and Julie Mandell. Marc had incredible parents who always were there to impart wisdom and laughs. Mr. Becker (sorry, I still can't call my childhood friends' parents by their first names) seemingly had a trick-shot for every point he chalked up at pool volleyball in the Beckers' backyard when it was 2-against-1 (him versus Marc and me), often looking away to distract us while he served a winner, channeling his best Magic Johnson. Prayers to Marc's family. So sorry for your loss. I am in disbelief.

No possible way I would have made it in NYC in business without Marc as the calm grounded helmsman in the most turbulent of waters. No truer headline than "the kindest person at Apollo has passed" was ever written.
May G-d blanket his family and friends with reminders of his presence.

Marc is one of those people that I will always be grateful for meeting 30 years ago. He was at Penn and I was at UF. We met in college and enjoyed spring breaks together in Daytona Beach and cruises. He was fun, smart, and wise when the rest of us were just wild. He grounded us. Over the years, I enjoyed getting together when I was in NYC and I texted him regularly from FL. He was always so kind and thoughtful in the advice he gave me. He was on the short list of people that gave me periodic counsel. He was also always willing to share a smile and a good laugh. I hope to see Marc again one day, and I'll keep Caryn and their beautiful children in my prayers.
