I knew Marc, "Dr. G" in the Macintosh community. He was passionate & erudite about our aging & expensive machines. Above all, Dr. G. had such a fine sense of humour. His lively contributions will be sorely missed. My deep condolences to his family.
In 2017, Marc offered this quote: "The care of the Earth is our most ancient and most worthy, and after all, our most pleasing responsibility. To cherish what remains of it and to foster its renewal is our only hope." Wendell Berry. It's an inspiring message still today.
Paix, mon ami.

Marc was a mensch. He had a lively mind, an extremely kind heart, and an infectious laugh. We worked closely together early in our careers. Marc taught me a lot about statistics, and even more about what it means to engage in true intellectual collaboration. He made his world a better place, and will be greatly missed.

Marc and I collaborated on a couple of papers. He was a great and innovative statistician and a wonderful person!

Marc was an incredibly brilliant man whose brilliance was only surpassed by his warmth and kindness. When I first came to Marc, my dissertation progress was stagnant to non-existent, and I was unsure about my ability to continue in graduate school. Marc took the time to listen to me and hear the struggles that I had been going through, not just in terms of the work but the emotional distress the lack of progress had wrought. He approached my distress with such calm and understanding that helped me to believe in my ability to make it through. Marc was also able to teach me so much about the process of research and statistics, broke down some of the most complex concepts into the simplest of terms. He worked with me to help me create my theoretical model and hypotheses, always promptly responded to me when I had questions, and most importantly cheered for me every step of the way. It is in large part due to him that I am now in a much better place in my dissertation process and can see the finish line for my PhD.
I will never forget just how thoughtful, caring, and considerate he was, and I will always remember him fondly. He would always ask to take my coat and hang it up in his closet. After paying him, he would always ask if I had enough money to get home. He would never let me leave unless he was sure I had a plan of action and that I felt comfortable with and understood the topic we had discussed. If you add up the number of hours we had met, it may only amount to 30, but the influence he has had on me as a thinker and human being are immeasurable. My sincerest condolences to his family and loved ones. I miss you Marc. You were the best teacher and role model anyone could ever ask for.
