MARGE SCHEUER Obituary

SCHEUER--Marge. Marge Scheuer, the widow of Walter Scheuer and like him a devoted New Yorker and seasonal resident of Martha's Vineyard, died peacefully at her home in New York City on February 21, 2026. She was 99 years old. Born in Brooklyn, Marge was raised in New York and Croton-on-Hudson, NY, where she attended the Hessian Hills school before transferring to the Fieldston School in the Bronx. She attended Swarthmore College, where she met her husband-to-be, Wally, after his return from service in World War II. She first visited the Vineyard ca. 1948, staying with Wally and his parents. Wally Scheuer died in 2004, and Marge's remains will join his in Abel Hill Cemetery on Martha's Vineyard this summer. Like Wally, Marge graduated from Swarthmore with High Honors in economics in 1948. She subsequently earned a master's degree in international affairs from Columbia University. Marge's eldest son, David, died in 2015; she is survived by her son Jeffrey and daughters Susan and Judith. In addition to raising her four children, Marge worked as a volunteer in the New York City public schools; served as President of the Citizens Committee for Children in New York; and was a longtime member of the Board of Managers of Swarthmore. She shared Wally's love of travel and music and his devotion to Symphony Space and Carnegie Hall, and to the many young musicians whom they befriended and supported. For some three decades, Marge also managed the Henry and Rose Pearlman Foundation, which owned the art collection of her father, Henry Pearlman. The Pearlman Collection has recently been bequeathed to the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Marge enjoyed summering in Chilmark on Martha's Vineyard for 74 years, through 2023. Her favorite pastime in later years was sitting on her deck, along with her dog Lizzie and a pair of binoculars, watching birds and boats on Menemsha Pond. She is sorely missed and her memory is cherished by her deeply devoted "Team Scheuer" caregivers and by her three surviving children, seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. A private memorial event is planned for Fall 2026.
