MARIA NEW Obituary

NEW--Maria I., M.D. We are deeply grieved that Maria I. New, MD, a mainstay of the endocrinology world for six decades and a leading light of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai faculty, passed away on Friday, July 26. Dr. New's career exemplified the link between clinical and basic science, with the constant goal of benefiting patients. Her remarkable clinical discoveries had their roots in her ability to combine care and compassion for patients with daring inquiry using all the resources of modern technology. She pioneered the use of molecular genetic diagnosis, and prenatal diagnosis and treatment, in an era when molecular biology and human genetics were in their infancy. Her creative study of an unusually large group of patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia was unparalleled in pediatric medicine. The trusting relationship she developed with these patients was essential to her understanding of the extremely personal symptoms of their illness and to the patients' maintaining regular clinic visits over some 40 years. Dr. New also discovered a new form of hypertension, apparent mineralocorticoid excess, which opened a new field of receptor biology. Her studies led to innovative diagnostic protocols and treatments used worldwide and identified opportunities for further research. Dr. New joined Mount Sinai in 2004. She served as Professor of Pediatrics, and Genetics and Genomic Sciences, and Director of the Adrenal Steroid Disorders Program at Icahn Mount Sinai. Dr. New was a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2022, Mount Sinai launched an international prize in her honor--the Maria New International Prize for Biomedical Research to recognize an individual whose contributions to science and medicine exemplify Dr. New's lifetime contributions. We offer our deepest sympathies to Dr. New's family, including her three children--all physicians, eight grandchildren, and four great- grandchildren. Dennis S. Charney, MD Eric J. Nestler, MD, PhD Lisa M. Satlin, MD Mone Zaidi, MD, PhD Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai

I had the privilege to spend almost one year and a half at the Pediatric Endocrinology of Cornell Univ.-NYU. It was long time ago (1985-6 and 1988) but I still have in my heart that period of my life as one of the most beautiful both for personal and professional reasons. This was because I met and I worked with Maria I. New, a fantastic scientist and a wonderful person. She welcomed me like a son and I will never forget what she taught me. Thanks Maria and many condolences to the family.

As a young trainee I was inspired by this pretty lady in the pediatric endocrine meetings and I was lucky enough to connect with her in the last 50 years when I worked in Boston, NYC and Miami! Brilliant mind!
Will miss her!

Maria I. New, MD, was my Chair during my Pediatric Residency, Chief Residency, and my short stint as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Cornell. I think about her often (as I do her younger brother who died way too young). Dr New was as gracious as she was demanding, and to me always accommodating. I very much enjoyed our long talks, usually at the end of the day. I also appreciate how honest she was with patients and parents when things didn´t go well; regardless of time of night or day, calls to parents, hospital administration, and experts in the field occurred with lightening speed. I expected no less from myself during my career. My deepest condolences to her children and grandchildren.

I was recommended to see Dr. New 35 years ago when she was at NewYork Hospital. I was born in 1949 and diagnosed with CAH in 1951! Obviously, there was no much known about it. I saw a physician at Columbia for a few years! Then I saw another endocrinologist at Columbia. I really think he didn´t care or did not know much about CAH!
When my son was about 8 years old, he started developing early! I saw a Dr. Novogroder in Teaneck that recommended Dr. New! She was a g-d send! Dr. New took an extreme interest in me and my son and then eventually my brother and my nieces and nephews! They didn´t have CAH but my nieces three children do! Dr. New changed my life! I never knew much about CAH until I met her!
What more can I say! She was an extremely caring, loving and brilliant woman! I know there will never be anyone like her!
May she Rest In Peace!

A lo alto de su estancia en el mundo. Brindar un último adiós a quien fuera un ser humano dedicado a la ciencia, enseñanza y a la amistad que nos brindo.
