MARK MCCULLOUGH Obituary

McCULLOUGH--Mark. Mark Lamons McCullough, 62, of Charlottesville, VA, died peacefully at home on December 31, 2025, after a two-year illness with glioblastoma. Mark worked as a lighting designer at the world's great opera houses, the West End, and on and off-Broadway. He created productions for the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, Bolshoi Theater, Opera National du Rhin (Strasbourg), Royal Opera House (London), Teatro Real (Madrid), Vienna State Opera, San Francisco Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Washington National Opera, Houston Grand Opera, The Glimmerglass Festival, Lincoln Center Theater, The New York Public Theater, Brooklyn Academy of Music, The Guthrie Theater, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, La Jolla Playhouse, Mark Taper Forum, Royal Shakespeare Company, and Shakespeare Theatre Company DC, among many others. Frequent collaborators included lifelong friends Francesca Zambello, Peter J. Davison, and Eric Sean Fogel. Early in his career, Mark fell in love with dancer Theresa Carney, whom he married in 1992. The family grew to include children Matthew and Hope, who were his greatest pride and joy. During the pandemic, Mark joined the team at Ace Contracting, a community-oriented homebuilding firm; although demand for his work in the theater soon returned, he was energized by the prospect of a new vocation. Mark is remembered for his curiosity, creativity, and relentless attention to detail, tempered with humor and kindness. The family requests any memorial contributions go to the National Brain Tumor Society, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, or The Glimmerglass Festival.

Mark was an incredible brother in law & husband to our sister Theresa & an amazing father to their 2 children Matthew & Hope! His legacy lives on through them & the beautiful work he did in the arts! We were so blessed to see many of the operas, ballets, broadway shows, theatre etc. with his lighting design. He literally & figuratively lit up a room with his contagious kindness, love & many talents especially in the arts! Heaven just became a better place with him in it! Shine on brother, we loved you so!

Russ and I are so sad to hear this. We worked with Mark a few years ago and he was wonderful.
We send prayers to his family and pray he is with his Savior now in glory where there is no more pain and suffering ...
