MARTIN BLOOM Obituary

BLOOM--Martin "Marty," 88, died peacefully on November 22 from brain injuries suffered from a fall. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Glenna, his sons Lloyd, Evan, Ira, daughter-in-law Bonnie, and four grandchildren. Born in Brooklyn in 1933, Marty graduated with high honors from Midwood High School and the Wharton School at Penn. Marty was a pioneer in the retail industry. After starting his career with Macy's and Bloomingdales in the 1950's, he moved with his family to Hong Kong in 1975 to open buying offices across Asia. He rose to lead all purchasing for May Department Stores internationally and served on the boards of several prominent retailers. As a chairman of the Trade Committee of the National Retail Federation, he advised on trade negotiations for the United States Government. Marty was always an active supporter of the arts and post retirement pursued his passions for tennis and bridge, sharing his love for the games with friends in the Berkshires, New York and Anguilla. He participated in the Maccabi games representing the US in both sports, including serving as chairman of the U.S. Bridge Team. Mostly Marty will be remembered for his infectious spirit and joy of life. Loved by all that knew him, he will be missed dearly by friends and family he took great efforts to remain close with around the world.

Marty would be happy that his early enthusiasm for pickleball started the surge of interest in the sport at the Stockbridge Golf Club, and will finally be realized with the construction of two new courts this winter. Way to go Marty!

Captain, my captain. Those were the words I so frequently used when talking to Marty, who captained our USA bridge team to Macabbi bronze in Budapest.
Your love, spirit and kindness will be with us always.

My sincere sympathy to Glenna and family for the loss of Marty Bloom. I have known and played tennis with Marty in Central Park for the past several years. Often, we were paired together in doubles and we enjoyed playing together. He was a friendly, warm, smart... and even though up in years, his strong stamina keep him active in tennis... and also promoting Pickleball in Central Park. May he "Rest in Peace."

We were privileged to know Marty for many, many years and very happy to have his three boys as campers at Echo Lake. Nobody had more friends than he did and for very good reason. Rest In Peace, Mary

My deepest sympathy to Glenna and family. I remember Marty's vibrancy at our last Midwood reunion and his participation in the Maccabi games at an age when most of us were happy to sit in a rocking chair.
