Yesterday I found my Highland Elementary music folder from the early 80s and gave it to my son who is now a first year elementary music teacher himself in NYC. We were driving together and he was going through my old music sheets and I remembered most of the words to every song even a song written by Mr Burman himself. I told my son that he has an opportunity to make a difference with the students he works with. After all, I can't remember any math, english, or social studies lessons from my elementary days but I remember the songs and concerts vividly and I remember Mr Burman. He had a great impact on me. I teach with students with several and multiple disabilities and I teach them almost everything through music. I developed my love of music due in large part to the efforts and creativity of Mr Burman. He is trueluly missed but his music lives on.

Its been 15 years since I last sat in Mr. Burmans music class, but today I found one of his songs playing on a loop in my head: If I could fly like a kite, Id weather that flight... I need a strong line down, anchored to the ground. I need a good long rope tied to a rock hard hope, and these words that didnt mean much to me as a kid, now made me smile. Mr. Burman was the most passionate teacher Id ever encountered, making little rockstars out of the most shy and aloof among us. He instilled in me a lifelong love of music and song for which I couldnt thank him enough. Rest in peace, friend.

Marty was the best guitar teacher ever. He was so funny and kind. You could talk to him about anything. Guitar lessons with Marty were one of the few things I looked forward to during my adolescent years. Keep rockin' in Heaven, Marty Burman!

Martin and I were best friends in the early 1970's in Co_op city. Martin was my mentor back then, and the smartest, clearest thinker I had ever met at this time in my life.
I've been trying to track him down for the last 5 years, I guess I found him, very sad for all of us

I grew up with Marty on Bronx Park East. Though I had not seen him for many years the memories of singing folk songs on the benches of the Bronx live on. I am truly saddened to have learned of his passing.

Mr. Burman helped me build my love of music. I just came to know of his passing earlier today, and it took a huge toll on me today. He will surely be missed. Sending my prayers and condolences to his friends and family.
He taught me from when I was in Kindergarden to the 7th grade when I attended Highland Elementary.
Thank you for all you've done for me sir.

I have thought of Marty so many times since he was my guitar teacher in the 1970s. I can still play one of the songs he wrote. He was so kind and inspiring to me, and I always meant to thank him for his encouragement.

I will miss you, Marty. I'll miss playing music with you...laughing, singing, watching you do things on a guitar that I couldn't imagine doing. I'm glad I got to hear your new song. I miss you already.

Marty was a beautiful person, inside and out. He was so kind to my grandchildren in Rockaway. He taught them paddleball on the beach itself. His high spirits will be missed.

A wonderful and talented human being left us, but he will never be forgotten. His love for music will continue to shine. It was a pleasure having him teach my children at Highland. Always said hello and had a smile on his face. Continue making sweet music in heaven. Love and peace.
