MARTIN RICHMAN Obituary

RICHMAN--Martin. Martin Richman, age 92, passed away on May 22, 2022. He is survived by Florence (Reif), his loving wife of over 60 years; children, Judy and Andy; daughter-in-law, Diane; and grandchildren, Sarah, Dan, and Emma. He was predeceased by his sister, Louise Levine; and son-in-law, Jerry Wittenberg. Marty was a great man. In his personal and professional lives, he put others' needs and wishes ahead of his own; listened more than he talked; grasped every detail while never boasting of his complete command of facts, law, and common sense; and exemplified morality and decency in everything he did. Clients and colleagues came to Marty for his bottomless wisdom (often receiving an equal dose of wit). He always found time for younger lawyers who needed a mentor, and younger persons (at home) needing help with their algebra. Marty was raised in Newark and White Plains. He attended St. Lawrence University and Harvard Law School, where he was Case Editor of the Harvard Law Review. Following military service, Marty served as law clerk to two titans of the federal judiciary: Calvert Magruder, Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, and Earl Warren, Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Marty then began a near 60-year career in private practice, interrupted by his appointment during the Johnson administration as Deputy Assistant Attorney General, Office of Legal Counsel, U.S. Department of Justice; focusing on general corporate law, corporate finance, and trusts and estates matters. He was a longtime partner in the Barrett Smith law firm and its predecessors, and later the Lord Day & Lord and K&L Gates firms. Marty was also devoted to the advancement and improvement of the legal profession itself, including leading the New York City Bar's advocacy for pro bono obligations; chairing the ABA's Section of Administrative Law; serving as a Life Member of the American Law Institute; and countless other legal and civic initiatives. In addition to his family and many friends, he loved music, travel, a good book (or two, or three), and the everlasting beauty of Wellfleet, MA. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 25, 2022 at 10:30am at Stephen Wise Free Synagogue, New York, NY.

Dear Flo, Andy, Judy and Family - Marty was a trusted advisor, legal counselor and friend of my Dad, Steve Gerson (1934-2020), and inspired my own legal career through his generous mentorship and wonderful example. With deepest condolences from the whole Gerson family of East 82nd Street, and in memory of our Mom, Susan (1939-2021), who also treasured Marty's and your friendship for decades.
