MARY BURKE Obituary

BURKE--Mary Griggs. The Trustees and staff of The Metropolitan Museum of Art mourn deeply the loss of Mary Griggs Burke, a generous donor, advisor, and friend, who served as Trustee since 1976 and as Trustee Emerita since 1995. A notable collector with a discerning eye and deep affection for Japan, with her late husband Jackson she assembled the largest and most encompassing private collection of Japanese art outside Japan. This superb collection was honored at the Museum with major exhibitions and accompanying publications in 1975 and 2000, both supervised by Miyeko Murase, professor emerita of Columbia University and former Special Consultant for Japanese Art at the Museum. Mrs. Burke shared her time and expertise generously, taking part for more than 30 years in committees for acquisitions and education, and other advisory groups. She donated works of art and acquisition funds to the Asian Art Department, frequently lent works to be shown in the Arts of Japan galleries, and funded research on Japanese art in the Met's collection. This generosity has greatly enhanced the Museum's dedicated efforts to display and study the arts of East Asia through exhibitions, publications, and research. We extend condolences to her entire family. Daniel Brodsky, Chairman Thomas P. Campbell, Director and CEO Emily K. Rafferty, President

Mary Griggs Burke was my Godmother and a truly wonderful, talented, and generous person. She was a great friend of my mother Patsy Pearce and will be greatly missed.

Mary and my uncle Jackson Burke were always kind to my family. My father was Jackson's brother and was best man at Mary and Jackson's wedding. From our brief encounters, I found Mary (she never liked "Aunt Mary") to be a woman of grace and good humor. She was a delight.

Mary Griggs Burke's incredible life showed in the grounds at Forest Lodge and in her sensitivity in collecting the works of art she did. I had the honor of conducting an oral history project on her life and on Forest Lodge, and was sorry we didn't have more than the one summer we did. She was generous to our community and left a lasting legacy.

Beautifully accomplished woman who never stopped learning of Japanese art
and the grace and traditions of the Japanese way of life. She embodied so much of it in her life and gave so much
to everyone.

An extremely bright and talented woman with great grace who took the New York
City art world by storm when she arrived in the 60's and began her collection of Japanese. Her life
itself was the way of Japanese art and its beauty, love and traditions.
