MAURA FLEMING Obituary

FLEMING--Maura A., age 61, a loving wife, devoted mother and caring eldest sister, died unexpectedly at her home in Ridgewood, New Jersey on January 22, 2021. She grew up in Brooklyn, the child of Irish and Northern Irish immigrants, John J. Fleming and Jean C. Fleming (nee Toner). Maura was the first in her family to go to college and later graduated from Fordham Law School where she met her future husband, Daniel A. Etna. Following graduation from law school, the couple initially lived in Manhattan. After giving birth to twin sons, Stephen and Daniel, the family moved to Ridgewood, New Jersey when the children were ready for kindergarten. Once the children reached junior high school, Maura returned to work at Tiedemann Advisers reuniting with former work colleagues Shannon M. Hennessey and Craig A. Smith, where she rose through the ranks to a senior executive level position specializing in trust and estate administration. The bond between Maura and Shannon extended well beyond the office with people often assuming they were sisters. Maura, forever a New Yorker and staunch Democrat, was proud to quickly proclaim that Elizabeth Holtzman was the first politician to receive her vote. Maura was also deeply inspired by the activism of former Supreme Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Maura was particularly fond of Broadway musical revivals -- such fondness often resulted in being told she was born a couple of decades too late. She will be remembered for her love of family, autumns in Nantucket, backyard cocktail and dinner parties by the pool, photography, genealogy, gardening and tennis. Maura was particularly proud of having won the Nantucket Historical Society Photography Contest and being a USTA-ranked player and member of the New Jersey ladies championship "pink team" from Ridgewood. Maura was also a long-standing member of St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church in Ridgewood, New Jersey and served on the Vestry for several years. Maura is survived by her loving and adoring husband, her twin sons, her sisters Sally Fleming in Brooklyn, her sister Geraldine P. Fleming, brother-in-law Joseph D. Gross and nephew James M. Gross of Greenwich, Connecticut. She is also survived by cousins/"sisters" Margo Hoffman of New Orleans and Anja Sullivan of Westfield, New Jersey, and numerous other cousins located throughout the United States and abroad. Maura was pre- deceased by her younger brother, John J. Fleming, Jr.

I met Maura through Facebook in a photos of NYC group.
I explained I'd never been to NYC but would love to visit as my 9th great grandfather's home was a museum in Brooklyn. Maura reached out and we had planned for me to come to NYC in the future. Sadly I will never meet her on this earth. I'm glad I did meet her via Facebook. My heart is absolutely broken for her loved ones. May God bless and comfort all of you.

We moved to NJ about 16 years ago from N. Calif and Maura became one of my first friends. She was an easy friend to have. As Gigi said, she was caring, witty, fun, brilliant, and beautiful. At the same time, she was down-to-earth, had an amazing sense of humor and despite her many successes, never "put on airs." She had so many close friends and made us all feel special. Maura, gone way too soon, is going to be greatly missed. Our deepest sympathy to her friends and her large, extended family from here to Ireland. All our love, Catherine Chriss and Tim Graham

Dear Dan, Stephen and Daniel,
We are so very sorry for your loss. Maura was a wonderful friend; always thoughtful and had a great gift of Irish storytelling. I always loved sitting in your garden and listening to her tell stories of family, gardening and especially the boys. She will be greatly missed. Please know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers.
All our love,
Cathy and Tony D’Uva and family

The Maura I knew was successful, brilliant, caring, witty, fun and beautiful. The Maura I knew loved show tunes, genealogy, family, friends and life in general. She wa a part of my history from high school through navigating the complexities of adult life...she knew me better than I knew myself and her counsel was invaluable. I will miss her more than I can fathom and am thankful she was such a big part of my life. My heartfelt and deepest sympathy to her family and friends.

To the Etna Family;
I am so very sorry to hear about the tragic and way too early death of your wife and your mother. I knew Maura from Ridgewood and being art docents at Willard. But I really bonded with her via Facebook in our love of New York City and with taking photographs of the city. We were both on the NYC Facebook page and I knew when someone posted a photo of Brooklyn; Maura was going to comment. She was very proud of both of her Irish background and NYC background. Deepest sympathy.

Dear Dan, Daniel and Stephen,
I am so sorry for your tragic loss. I was very fortunate to reconnect with Maura at our HS reunion 8 years ago and to have spent quite a bit of time with her since then. She was so full of life and always able to make us laugh. Maura's achievements in her career and home life were amazing, and I truly admired her. I will greatly miss Maura. My prayers and thoughts are with you at this time, and I hope that memories of her smile, laughter, Irish accent imitations, and your times together help to ease your pain.
With love,
Susan Puglia
