My first trip abroad was to Sicily, Italy, via a layover in Rome in the spring of 1989. I was an American born girl who was able to join my Italian-born grandmother to the nation Rabb was charged with providing diplomacy for the United States of America.
We had no reason to engage with you directly (as far as I have been told to this time), and after the Latin mass and grand party for the wedding of my second cousin, we returned home to the States without incident (except for an accordion skirt bought from the small town market that was stolen from our checked baggage--something my paternal cousin mocked recently--and a light tomato tinged sunburn begotten from leisure at the oil laden waters of the Mediterranean).
I hear you left the boot shortly thereafter as well, and then Mr. Secchia took over as Ambassador. I took no part, but it seems you were revered to that time in Italy.
My grandmother just passed away today in Connecticut (USA). Her last words expressed a yearning for her Italian-born mother, who predeceased her by about 20 years. Her momma was always very good to her, a real proper Italian landowning lady who celebrated when the Americans came to town at the end of World War II.
I later worked for the State Department as well--when going through law school in Iowa for the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement. I think it may have gotten me to the United Nations with my business (International Attestations, LLC), the year that Israel began intensive implosions around Jewish and Muslim leadership issues (2023).
