Michael Denker Obituary

1946 - 2013
Michael Porter Denker, 66, co-owner of Hopkins & Porter Construction, a residential design/build firm based in Potomac, MD, died May 22, 2013, at Casey House in Gaithersburg, MD. He was diagnosed with melanoma the summer of 2012.

The son of Jane Denker of Shelburne, VT and Dr. David Denker, deceased, who met working at the New York Times in 1941, Michael was born in 1946 in New Haven, CT, moving later to Somerset, NJ.

As a teenager, Michael's summers were spent as a camper at The Prairie Trek, Cottonwood Gulch, in Thoreau, New Mexico. Drawn to the land, animals, plants, archaeological past, and native peoples of the southwestern United States, he returned as a counselor, cook, and group leader for the better part of a decade.

At Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, where he graduated in 1970, with a BA in Art, Michael married Ellen Gray, a dance major in 1971. A co-op job led them to a 4 year commitment teaching adult education for Frontier College on the island of Igloolik, Canada. While in Canada, they purchased 220 acres in Gilmer County, West Virginia, inspiring Mike's love of wild forests and fostering his active interest in land stewardship.

After moving to Potomac, Mr. Denker co-founded Hopkins & Porter Construction in 1977, along with his brother-in-law, Guy Hopkins Semmes. Having celebrated 36 years of business, they were recognized for seven years by the DC Metro Chapter of National Association of the Remodeling Industry for creative design.

Michael gained a reputation for his love of letterpress printing and extensive knowledge of nineteenth-century wood type. A notable printed item produced by Mr. Denker, who struggled with dyslexia as a child, was a poster imprinted "Dyslexics Untie." Chris Manson, a printer friend and fellow member of the Chesapeake Chapter of APHA, where Michael was President for 4 years, said that Michael's "endless curiosity about all aspects of printing history and practice made him one of the most informed and thoughtful practitioners of the Art I have ever known."

Michael was active in his community, volunteering as Quartermaster for the C&O Canal Trust, serving two years as President of Montgomery County Builders Association and Secretary for West Montgomery County Citizens Association, and writing for the Potomac Almanac Newspaper. With his company, Hopkins & Porter, he made recognized contributions to the Bethesda Big Train and Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County. Proud to be a NARI certified remodeler, Michael was the only man to win the John Brawner Memorial "Builder of the Year" Award twice from MCBA.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Ellen Gray Denker of Potomac, MD; his daughter Nora Sibley Denker, of San Francisco, CA; his brother Joel Denker, of Washington, D.C.; his sister Dana Semmes, of Potomac, MD; his sister Cornelia Emlen of Calais, VT; and his mother, Jane Gurley Denker, of Shelburne, VT. Contributions can be made to Cottonwood Gulch Foundation, P.O. Box 25106, Albuquerque, NM 87125. A celebration of his life is planned for early fall 2013.

I close my eyes and the Mike Denker I see is the Group III cook, my first magical summer on the Trek. I see a young man wise far, far beyond his years, a young man with big mustachios and a big, warm, welcoming grin. A listening man. A man in a corduroy coat with big patch pockets, one stained with printer's ink. I close my eyes and I see a young man filled with creative, nurturing energy, brimming with enthusiasm, a young man who will go forward into life with joy and good humor, with wit and unbearable charm. I left that summer imprinted with Mike Denker, with the knowing that this is how a life is lived, this is how a man can be. No small treasure for a young squirt to take home. He cooked his way into my young heart; he remains in my aging heart, forever young.
Blessings to you all...
Schuyler

Dana & Guy: I was very saddened to hear of Mike's passing. It has been 48 years since I last spent any time with Mike, but some people you just never forget. I was his quartermaster when he served the summer as cook for Prairie Trek Group III under Group Leader Dr. Ostrom. He was not quite two years older than me so we had a lot in common and had a great time that summer. He was a unique guy. I am particularly vexed that his time was cut so short. I intend to honor his memory by joining those donating to the Prairie Trek in his name, and I shall hold the two of you and your family in my prayers for those who are grieving such a huge personal loss. I pray for God's blessings on you during the emotional journey you are on.

Dana and Guy,

I just learned of Michael's death, through Charlotte's posting on Facebook. I am so sorry. As you know, we lost my brother Lyman to cancer in 2011. It is truly wrenching when people of our generation leave us. His obituary sounds like he did some amazing things, and I hope eventually you will be able to see the positives, once the grieving is ending. I'm still slowly trying to get to this point with Lyman.

All the best,
Molly

My condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Denker. May you find comfort in the words of Psalm 65:2 where we are reminded that our heavenly father is the hearer of prayers.
