MICHAEL GARR

GARR--Michael, died on May 17, 2012, ten weeks after he was diagnosed with liver cancer. He was surrounded by his dear friends and family at Haven Hospice in Manhattan. Michael was born and raised in Atlanta, GA and although a Manhattanite for most of 30 years, he retained a southern gentility while facing the challenges of living in New York. He nourished his southern roots in recent years by visiting family in Pawley's Island, SC. Michael came to New York in 1980 to attend Circle in the Square School of Performing Arts. He also attended Parsons School of Design. He worked as an actor in New York and Washington, DC, where he lived for seven years. He appeared in commercials, corporate films, TV shows, off Broadway plays and regional theater. While in Washington, his priorities shifted significantly and he found a new primary purpose. At about this time, he began working in the real estate business and discovered he had a real knack for it. Missing Manhattan, he returned to New York where his charm, creativity, insight into people, and negotiating skills were the recipe for his considerable success as a broker, investor and developer. Michael was well known for his integrity and kindness. Michael is survived by many dear friends and, his beloved family, Sally Garr Brodhead, Andy Garr of Henderson, TX. He was predeceased by his parents M. A. Garr, Jr. and Lorraine Sarah Mullaney. A memorial service will be held at Church of the Ascension on July 26, 2012 at 6:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations should go to the Church of the Ascension Outreach where he was on the Board of the Food Pantry or to the Ryan White Program in Charleston SC.
