MILDRED ALPERN Obituary

ALPERN--Mildred Rosoff, died in New York City on April 11, 2023. She was born in Boston on September 10, 1931. We eloped on August 27, 1954, after having known each other for only two months. That was 69 years ago. In June of 1949, she graduated from Girls' Latin School with honors. In 1953, she graduated from Boston University with Summa Cum Laude added to her Curriculum vitae. After bearing two beautiful children, she returned to school and received her Masters degree to begin teaching European history, writing articles and a book along with pursuing other interests. Enough of the statistics. Those who knew her knew a loving Mother, a brilliant teacher, a wise friend and an inquisitive thinker. After retirement, she became a photographer whose work hangs in galleries worldwide. And now I am told it is time to say goodbye. I can't. At 92, I know I will never say goodbye. Yes, goodbye will be left unsaid and both Milly and I will become others' memories. It all began on a hot Sunday in June 1954. Rather than join my family in the traditional opening of our summer home, I chose to spend the weekend in the city, an unusual choice I cannot explain. Just hanging out in my mother's apartment keeping cool when the phone rang; a friend returning from Fire Island looking for a spot to cool off. Said he hoped I'd be home. He arrived shortly with a friend in tow. It was Milly. A sight I still see in my mind's eye. After a short time, we decided to venture out to have dinner. I was about to turn 23. I wondered if I would make it. The world stopped the moment I saw Milly. Ridiculous as it may sound, I was in love. Two months later we eloped. The story continues for 68+ years. Ah Milly, I miss you terribly. Nubby

I was in Ms. Alpern's psychology class in my senior year at Spring Valley High School in 1975. She was a marvelous teacher, a role model for young women, with a vibrant personality. She was also the only teacher to ever see who I truly was, as she wrote in my yearbook: "a jock who is also an egghead". I was delighted to see she pursued photography, one of the mediums I engage in after a lifetime in graphic arts and music. I'm a better person for having been taught by her and I feel honored and grateful to have been one of her students. May blessings surround her and hers.

Millie Alpern was my AP history teacher in 12th grade in 1970-71. She was my most impactful and consequential teacher to that point in my life. She helped me become intellectually curious, was ever kind and thoughtful, laughed at my jokes and encouraged and made me feel that I could be more than I thought I could be. I have very fond memories of her and am so sorry to hear of her passing.

I student taught with Milly Alpern at Spring Valley High School in 1995. Milly was a friend, a confidant, a mentor and an extraordinary human being. She saw potential in me, a young Latina teaching Social Studies, when nobody else did. Milly taught me how to be an educator, how to plan lessons, how to reach all students and how to love my profession. I will always remember the first day we met and will forever cherish our time together. I am so sorry for your loss as I know, first hand, what a remarkable person Milly was. Milly will forever live in my heart!

A high school friend sent me Mrs. Alpern's obituary. We graduated Spring Valley High in 1972. Millie was an extraordinary teacher. She loved reaching inside of us and bringing out the best in us. She got us to think about issues and come to our own ideas. She was warm and so caring. I still remember what she wrote in my yearbook, it made me feel seen. I am so sorry for your loss and so wonderful to find out she was so well loved by you. Warmest regards, Robin Hruska
