Morton Sanders Obituary

1925 - 2018
Morton (Suzowsky) Sanders ended his journey on this earth on February 15th, 2018, at his home in Manhattan, after a difficult struggle with dementia. A father, grandfather, great-grandfather, consummate financial wizard and accomplished musician, Morton's life was lived with grace, humor and caring for all to whom he was connected.

He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Roberta Joan Frost Sanders on December 26, 2014. He was also predeceased by his two sisters Mildred Weissman and Sylvia Idelson.

He is survived by his three children, Michael (Sally) of Chester, CT, Janet (Kevin) Bunnell of Owego, NY and James (Holly) of Yardley, PA. He also loved and was loved by his five grandchildren, Chelsea (Jason) Donlin, Benjamin and Bryan Bunnell, Matthew and Zachary Sanders, and great-grandson Jackson Donlin.

The family holds his caregivers, Mary Jelia and Nino Bacuradze, in our thoughts and prayers. For almost four years, their tireless care and love provided Morton with the highest quality of life possible under the circumstances. They have become members of our family, and there is no way we can adequately express our gratitude.

Morton was born in The Bronx on March 2, 1925 to Samuel Suzowsky and Celia Brown. He graduated from Newtown High School at age 16 and went to Queens College for two years before entering military service. He was assigned to the 558th Army Air Force Band and spent two years serving as a Sergeant in the Asia-Pacific Theater during World War II. He was proud to say his military band often performed as an integrated unit while the rest of the military was still segregated.

Returning from military service he graduated from Long Island University, then embarked on an accounting career, passed the CPA exam and worked with various companies. In 1970 he found his dream job at Glenwood Management, a Manhattan luxury rental real estate company. He served as Vice President, Finance and during his 44 years with Glenwood he was much beloved and mentored many.

He also cared about and gave back to his community. Residing in Merrick, NY for more than 40 years, he was active in many organizations including being a Past President of the Merrick Brotherhood Council, and found a special pleasure in belonging to the Kiwanis Club of Merrick, where he served two terms as President and in numerous other positions over the years. Beyond his active participation in hundreds of Kiwanis events, he could always be counted on to provide a poem or a song for birthdays, life events, or just for the heck of it.

The family will be celebrating Morton's life privately. Morton's and Roberta's ashes will be interred in a National Veterans' Cemetery at a future date.

In line with Morton's favorite causes, charitable contributions may be made in his memory to support the music education, arts or social justice cause of your choosing, or to the Alzheimer's Association or the Litwin-Zucker Center for Alzheimer's Disease and Memory Disorders.
