PETER SWORDS Obituary

SWORDS--Peter deLancey. Peter deLancey Swords passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on May 9, 2023 at Mount Sinai Morningside hospital in New York City due to complications following a femur fracture after a fall. Surrounding him at his death were his loving wife Brenda and daughters Deirdre and Eliza. He was 88 years old and had recently survived pancreatic cancer. A lifelong New Yorker, he graduated from Harvard University in 1957 and Columbia Law School in 1962. He served for two years as LT (jg) in the U.S. Pacific Fleet aboard the USS Boxer (CV-21), an aircraft carrier, while it was command ship for Operation Hardtack, the 1958 nuclear tests in Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands. In 1966, while an associate at Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, Peter's strong convictions about racial equality and social justice led him to work with the Lawyers' Committee in Mississippi where he represented Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and many others. In 1972 he became Associate Dean at Columbia Law School where, with a colleague, he developed a course on nonprofit law which he taught for four decades. As a pioneer of nonprofit law, he embraced a liberal view of "charitable purpose" to include not only relieving poverty, advancing education, and serving religion, but also serving "other purposes beneficial to the community, not falling under the preceding heads." Peter played a crucial role in defending the city's nonprofit sector when in the 1980's the Koch administration proposed rescinding the nonprofit property tax exemption. He went on to co-found the Nonprofit Coordinating Committee of New York (now Nonprofit New York), an organization devoted to improving and protecting the city's nonprofit sector. He subsequently served as their Executive Director and President until he retired in 2000. As a lifelong student of philosophy, Peter was deeply interested in ethics and morality, the philosophy of giving, and how to reconcile competing public interests in society. He was a dedicated and long-serving board member and legal advisor to many organizations including La Mama Theatre, Harlem School of the Arts, Correctional Association of New York, Early Music Foundation, Century Association Archives Foundation, Mountain Top Historical Society of Haines Falls, NY, and the organization of Amma, "the hugging saint." He was also a great lover of art, and a diverse array of favorite music was a constant backdrop to his days (jazz, classical, opera, Armenian, rock and pop). He greatly enjoyed the beauty of the natural world on his daily runs in Riverside Park or gazing out over the magnificent Hudson Valley from his desk in the Catskills. Peter's positivity impacted all who met him, from friends and colleagues to local store owners to his extended and adoring family. A unique and remarkable man, he will be remembered for his kindness, friendliness, optimism, desire to help others, curiosity, intellect, and his smile. He will be forever missed by all who knew and loved him. Toward the end of his life, while undergoing chemotherapy for cancer, his appreciation of nurses and science reached a new high. Those wishing to commemorate his memory may contribute to the research of Dr. Susan Bates at the Pancreas Center at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. I have just learned of Peter´s passing and am so sad he is no longer present on this earth. I knew Peter from my grad school days at Columbia where he was mentor and guide to so many of us. And that continued through my career in nonprofitdom where I continued to benefit from his wisdom, his humor, and his passion for justice. To his family, know that he is still thought of often with admiration and gratitude no matter where his spirit now resides.

I worked for Peter Swords back in 1974-78 when he was Assistant Dean at Columbia Law School. Fond memories of those days. I was very sad to hear of his passing.

My deepest sympathies and condolences to the family. I may not have ever met this incredible person...but I am most impressed and encouraged by his spirit and love for his fellow man. His service to our country and his service to its citizens at all levels, creeds, colors, religions, etc., is most commendable and deserving of recognition. I would have been honored to meet this extraordinary man. Bless his legacy and his family: God's speed, Peter Swords.

A remarkable man, dear friend and neighbor. Missing his gentle wise ways and his sense of humor. Jim and I are a bit lost without him. How can we find our way home from Hayward?
Our love to Brenda, Deidre, and Eliza.

I only know Peter from his role on the Board of the Mountain Top Historical Society. He was our treasurer and would wrangle the monthly accountants reports into a succinct report for Board meetings. He always cautioned us about watching the bottom line, but would end with an upbeat note. He will be hard to replace, on so many levels. His broad understanding of nonprofit legal issues made him an invaluable colleague. He and I worked together when we rewrote our Bylaws in 2014. His nonprofit knowledge was formidable. It was an honor and privilege to have him on the Board of the Historical Society. I miss him very much. Adrienne Larys, president, MTHS

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of the delightful and wonderful Peter Swords. I knew Peter from my days at the Rockefeller Family Fund in New York, where I became involved in monitoring policies that would impact New York nonprofits. Peter was the go to person on this subject, a font of knowledge and so generous with his insights. As an affable and highly capable advocate for the nonprofit sector, he served as a role model (and advocating for the nonprofit sector is exactly what I am doing 30 years later). Peter had a huge impact on so many! Sending heartfelt sympathy to Peter's family and loved ones.

My parents, Dean and Alice Davies, owned the chapel at Twilight Park until their deaths in 2008 and 2009. Peter and Brenda used to stop by on their walks around the park. Dad always enjoyed rigorous and playful philosophical discussions with Peter, as well as earnest consultations on how to solve the problems facing the world. All of my own contacts with Peter were evidence of his warmth, kindness, and good humor. My heart goes out to Brenda and his family.

Peter was my very good friend, nonprofit mentor for more than 15 years, and fellow devotee of Amma, our spiritual guide.

Peter exuded goodness. Peter and I did volunteer legal work for Amma's nonprofit corporation. Peter was always present to give legal advice and more important to make the work genuinely feel good because of Peter's uplifting spirit. We shared our love for Amma and our love to serve Amma's innumerable charitable activities.

Words do not express my sadness and sense of deep loss of one of my best friends. I do believe deeply that Peter is now experiencing much peace because goodness was Peter's essential nature.

I´m a full time resident of Haines Falls, which Peter got to enjoy on a part time basis. Not being exposed to the "Working Peter," I only knew the personal side of him. Peter was a good man, to everyone. In Peters eyes, each person he met was important. He was a true gentleman. He will be greatly missed on the Mountain Top.

Peter was a very special person. I knew him for many years in Twilight community. His gentle leadership, intellect and kindness will be missed. He had a broad range of interests, including our mutual connection to Amma G. Sending love and salutations to you dear Peter.

Peter's wife and mine are cousins. Not sure what that makes Peter and me, except that we were dear friends.

Peter was the most interesting man I've ever met. His extraordinary intellect and inquisitive nature were expressed through his deep compassion. Peter would discuss anything with enthusiasm; he was always curious, always philosophic.

The pandemic kept us from getting together face to face for the past few years, a bitter reminder of how precious our time together is. But I am so grateful that Peter requested a Zoom with me just weeks before he passed. I am also deeply grateful I was able to tell him just how much his friendship meant to me, how fascinating he was to talk to, and how I loved him. In his typically humble way, he smiled and expressed his wish that we get together soon.

I will miss our talks about music, particularly jazz, his passion, and about philosophy, which we both studied. I will miss Peter's terrific stories, some about his law career, his family, his travels, and his charitable work which was plentiful! But mostly I will miss being under the influence of Peter's greatness, his warm smile, his interested nature, his generosity of spirit.

This world has lost a great man. The next has gained a great spirit.

Oh, Peter, you will be missed. You fought the good fight for the charitable sector when the Koch administration sought to revoke the charitable exemption from real property taxes causing a number of fragile nonprofits to close their doors. And then went on to found the Nonprofit Coordinating Committee to organize, strengthen and protect this city's vital nonprofit sector. What an amazing legacy. Your humor and wit will be missed by your colleagues and admirers. Rest in peace, dear friend. Carolyn Cochran Clark
