Peter Walsh was a great neighbor who provided a safe space for celebration and community bonding. From his dinner table visits with guests, to his ingenious creation of the Coogan's 5K and children's race, the memories are forever heart warming.

Sincerest Sympathies to the Walsh Family. I first met Peter, Dave and the crew of Coogan´s primarily because of the Salsa and Shamrock Blues Run.
My sister-in-law was asked to start the race in honor of her husband, and my brother, Capt. Frederick J.ILL, Jr.
Peter arranged this as a way of honoring the FDNY after September 11th. I got to see first hand how Peter treated everyone and I do mean EVERYONE!!! Peter was kind and welcoming, funny and friendly. He had a way of making you feel like an old time friend - from forever. Coogan's has been missed since its closure, but the world lost a real treasure in Peter Walsh, family man, poet, singer, storyteller, bar-owner and activist. (And friend to all)
He will be missed, but happy memories remain.

Peter Walsh was a force of nature and a force for good. When my friend Ellen Wallop introduced me to him-in advance of running my first NYC Marathon-back in 1998, he greeted me as though we'd been friends for years. My family and I would return to Coogan's over the years and Peter would always be there to greet us with a smile, especially at our annual Christmas Eve gathering of friends there that came to be known as "The Island of Misfit Toys." My daughter took her first steps in Coogan's on one of those Christmas Eves. Peter seemed at the center of everything that was happening around not just Washington Heights, but the city itself. His love of his neighborhood, friends, New York, running, and so much more, was always evident. We're not likely to see another one like him. He'll be missed.
