PHYLLIS KRIEGEL

KRIEGEL--Phyllis, whose restless intelligence and eagerness to share intellectual discoveries kept her friends alert, died peacefully at her home in Greenport, NY on July 29, 2025 at 95. Phyllis was a resident first of Englewood, NJ, then Greenwich Village, East Hampton, and most recently, Greenport, NY. Publisher turned painter, Phyllis received her BA and MA in Women's History from Sarah Lawrence. Until her retirement in 1993 she edited New Directions for Women, a feminist news magazine. Following her editing career she turned to painting, and studied painting at the Victor D'Amico Art Barge in Napeague, at the New School and in Assisi. She attended the IRP at the New School until she turned 90 and left New York City for Greenport, NY. She brought her fervor to Peconic Landing, sharing her intellect with her new community, organizing amongst other endeavors an Anges Varda film festival. Phyllis is survived by her children, Nancy and David Kriegel, daughter-in-law Cynthia Flynt, and grandchildren Sophie and Malcolm Kriegel.
