QUENTIN DEMING Obituary

DEMING--Quentin B., M.D., Professor Emeritus, died at home in Hanover, NH, on January 21, 2019, at age 99. Born in New York City on July 24, 1919, Chip--as he was known since childhood--attended Loomis Institute and graduated summa cum laude from Dartmouth in 1941. In 1942 he graduated from Dartmouth Medical School, after which he completed his medical training at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons. Following service as a doctor in the Navy during World War II, he won a three- year medical fellowship at Stanford University. He conducted research and was on the faculty of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine for decades. Widely admired by his colleagues and beloved by his patients, he adhered to the highest ethical standards of the medical profession and was always a calming and reassuring presence for those in his care. Chip was predeceased in 2015 by his wife of 65 years, Vida Ginsberg Deming, a formidable figure in her own right as a dramatist and teacher of the arts at the Juilliard School and Bard College. During their long years together, they nurtured and inspired a wide circle of adoring friends and relatives. They especially enjoyed sitting on their deck overlooking the Connecticut River, drinks in hand, admiring the view. Chip loved the north country, and the daily joy he took from living there in his later years was in turn a joy for all those around him. Chip was a gentle soul and was deeply wise about people and about the ways of the world. He was learned, always curious, and a wonderful listener, and he brought his kindness and his caring to all his relationships. His devotion knew no bounds - to his work, to his causes and most of all to his family. Chip is survived by his brother, Angus Deming, his daughters, Lilith Deming and Maeve Guesdon, three grandchildren, Julie Grimaldi, Jeremy Guidoni and Jules Guesdon, his great-grandson, Jacques- Toussaint Grimaldi, his son- in-law Jean-Francois Guesdon, and loving members of his extended family. Today I learned of Chip's passing which, I think, leaves me the last....or close to the last....of the original Einstein recruits in Medicine. Chip was a colleague, leader, adviser and friend from the time he arrived at Einstein. A man of quiet charm, wit and high intelligence, he served as a marvelous role model and friend. My condolences to all of his family.

To the Deming Family: My heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there's a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.
