R. GREATHEAD Obituary

GREATHEAD--R. Scott. Scott Greathead died of cancer on August 17th at the age of 78. He leaves behind his daughters Kate, Frances, and Molly Greathead; son-in-law Teddy Wayne; his brother Tim Greathead; grandchildren Angus and Phoebe Greathead; and ex-wife and lifelong friend, Christy Pennoyer. He was predeceased by his second wife of 20 years Juliette Bennett in 2022. He was a loving, generous person with a deep soul and an ironic sense of humor. He had a twinkle in his eyes that was irresistible. He was imaginative and intellectually curious. Raised in Newport Beach, CA, he came East to Princeton and never went back. After serving in the Marine Reserves, he attended UVA Law School. He moved to New York City, where he practiced law in several firms over 50 years, as well as serving six years as First Assistant in the New York State's Attorney General's office in the 1980s. His passion was human rights. For more than 40 years he worked pro-bono on behalf of people who were harmed by repressive regimes in countries from Latin America to Asia, investigating and litigating human rights cases. He wrote extensively about human rights, including op-eds in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal. He represented the families of the churchwomen who were murdered by members of the Salvadoran security forces in 1980 and played a key role in pressing for a successful trial of the men who committed these crimes -- the first trial to hold government soldiers accountable for human rights crimes. In 1989 he represented the Jesuit Church after six Jesuit priests were murdered, also by the Salvadoran military. His persistent advocacy challenged the United States government's support for El Salvador's authoritarian government. He was a founding board member of several organizations including the Center for Reproductive Rights, Human Rights First, New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, Friends of the Forensic Anthropology Foundation of Guatemala, and Friends of China Labour Bulletin. He was a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and served on the boards of Human Rights in China and Hudson River Sloop Clearwater as well as two foundations, The Sperry Fund and American Conservation Association. In 2016 he co-produced an award-win- ning documentary, "Finding Oscar," about his client Oscar Ramirez who, at the age of three, was one of two survivors when his village was destroyed by a Guatemalan military death squad. Scott was admired for his relentless pursuit of justice and loved by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to Friends of FAFG, Friends of China Labour Bulletin, or HRIC (Human Rights in China)." A memorial will be held on November 9, 2024.

I was blessed to have reconnected with my first cousin Scott last fall. I cherish my visit with him and the days we spent at his home in Hudson Vally and the hours we spent talking and the pictures and memories we shared. I had hoped for more time with him, but thankful for what we had. I have now reconnected with his brother Tim, so I thank Scott for that. With love
Scott. I will miss you. ❤

I met Scott through my dear college friend Juliette Bennett. I remember their wedding, where I gave a reading, with great warmth and joy. Scott became not only a friend but also my mentor and boss at World Monitors. He and Juliette will always be in my heart.

I myself has benefited from Scott's human rights work. Before 1991, political prisoners in provinces other than in Beijing were mostly unnoticed and therefore suffered the worst treatment in China's prisons. After the end of 1991, we were suddenly treated much better, due to Human Rights Watch and Human Rights in China's advocacy. As a former political prisoner from China, I want to thank Scott, and want to send my sincere condolences to the family of Scott Greathead

Dear Scott, I cannot believe you are gone. Lawyers together in city, state, and federal government, fighting for what is right. Friends and lunch partners for many years afterwards. The world has lost an extraordinarily kind and caring human being, and I have lost a dear friend. I miss you, Scott. My condolences to your family and friends.

Dear Scott, I am so sad you have passed into spirit. You were introduced to me by my good friend Roland Legardia- Laura.
You were a man of great integrity, goodness and honesty. After our first meeting I called you that same night regarding a friend who was wrongfully arrested. You were in bed and it was 12 o´clock at night. Most people would not have answered the phone, let alone got dressed and went down to the tombs to get my friend out. You didn´t even know this woman but you knew if you showed up they would release her. Then recently you helped me with another family matter for which I will always be eternally grateful. You are salt of the earth and a true warrior for those in need. You are also a wonderful dad and were a wonderful husband to my wonderful and beautiful friend Juliette. You will be very missed. Safe travels my friend. Say hello to Roland and Juliette. No doubt they are waiting for you with glasses of champagne to toast your arrival.

I cam't believe he is gone: Scott was a a rock, a stalwart agent for justice. He hired one of my former students active in the Princeton Justice Project. He will be missed, never forgotten. Bill (Rex) Potter '68 (a fellow converted Californian)

I met Scott at Princeton. But it was later that our paths crossed more often. In the 1980s and 1990s I would for a series of US ambassadors to the UN. Scott and I lived in the same neighborhood and our paths would often cross, as happens in a city of folks who walk to work. We exchanged worries and stories. I was inside the system, he was outside. I always benefitted from his sage and positive advice. He understood how power and privilege crush so many people. And he always thought we could, and should, do better. Cameron Hume PU `68

I had the great privilege of working with, and learning from, Scott in an array of human rights projects. I'll always remember the human rights mission we did to Mexico. He was tough, funny, and indefatigable. The same applies for his longstanding interest in human rights in China and Hong Kong, as well as Northern Ireland. His dedication to international human rights, not to mention his thoroughness and zeal, was second to none. He will be greatly missed.

Barbie and I spent many wonderful evenings sitting outside in Stone Ridge with Scott and Juliette, drinking wine and watching the sun go down. Two wonderfully informed people who gave so much back to the world around them. I was honored to meet them, then get to know them, and finally spend great times with them. I´ll miss them both for the rest of my life. I´m happy to have had them in it.

Scott may be one of the greatest story tellers to ever grace this earth. Occasionally it was the same story, but what I loved, truly loved, is that the story never changed. It was literally word for word. That´s how deeply he felt the story. How much he cared about the people in the story. His mind was a memory wheel chugging out names and places. People I never knew became real to me. And I loved it. He was a rare person indeed. Filled with an inner goodness that´s both hard to find and even harder to describe. Fly on, Scott. I´ll meet you on the coast of Scotland one stormy day....

I am so sorry to learn of Scott's passing. I was privileged to work with Scott in the NYS AG's office where we accomplished terrific work together. I continued to stay in touch with Scott after we left the AG's office and he contacted me regularly regarding labor and employment matters. We always shared good laughs in every conversation. Scott was one of the finest lawyers and persons. I will miss him. He will stay with us in our hearts and minds forever. Rich Corenthal

I was privileged to work with Scott when he was First Assistant Attorney General and I was Section Chief and later Deputy Chief of the Litigation Bureau in the New York office of Attorney General Robert Abrams. Scott was a genuinely nice person as well as a terrific lawyer, as Bob Abrams himself attested in his autobiography. May his family and those close to him be comforted by wonderful memories of Scott.
