RICHARD ABRAMSON Obituary

ABRAMSON--Richard.

Age 70, of Hewlett Bay Park and Manhattan, passed away peacefully at home on January 17, 2016 after a long and brave battle with Multiple Myeloma. Loving husband of Lorraine, beloved father of Gregg and Jill, father-in-Iaw of Lauren and Jake and proud grandpa to Emma, Leah, Miles and Sadie. Richard was Senior Vice President and Senior Managing Director at Alliance Bernstein for 37 years, President of The Washington Institute for Near East Policy and served on the investment committees of North Shore-LIJ Health System, The Association of Graduates of The Air Force Academy and the Legacy Heritage Fund. He was a board member of The American Friends of The Hebrew University. Richard initiated and funded a program at The Auschwitz Jewish Center, where cadets from the Air Force, West Point and The Naval Academies go to Auschwitz to study the Holocaust. He supported The Israel Sports Center for the Disabled, AIPAC and UJA-Federation. Richard was an avid swimmer, winning a gold and silver medal at the Maccabi Games in 1961 and met his wife Lorraine at the Maccabi Games in 1965. His passion for swimming led him and his swimming buddies to swim the English Channel in 2008 and they did a relay swim around Manhattan Island in 2013 to raise money for Multiple Myeloma. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the U.S. Air Force Academy and a Masters in Business Administration from Babson College. He was a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) charterholder. Richard's optimism throughout his illness was an inspiration to us all. Funeral services will be held at Stephen Wise Free Synagogue, 30 West 68th Street, New York, NY 10023 on Wednesday, January 20 at 10am. Donations may be made to: The Ichan School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai, Multiple Myeloma Research, Mt. Sinai Development Office, One Gustave L. Levy Place, Box 1049, New York, NY 10029.

Richard was a huge influence on me at Bernstein and I always appreciated his help with my career.

January 29, 2016

Abe was a year ahead of me in 19th Squadron at the Air Force Academy. His class was responsible for our military training, and Abe was one of the best in that capacity. Tough, but fair, he always had the right perspective on what was really important. It was my distinct pleasure to have served with him.

Richard exemplified hard work; dedication; generosity; selflessness; kindness; respect; humor; love of friends, family and thy neighbor; and he had an uncanny ability to help you truly get to know yourself. Best of all, he could make you laugh even at the most challenging of times (like at nine o'clock at night when you were rushing to get him on a plane to God-knows-where and that cantankerous copier choked on your last presentation book!!!) Thank you for all of the lessons, guidance and kindness--may you rest gently and peacefully. All my love to Lorraine, Jill, Gregg and the whole family. With sincerest sympathies,

Richard was a wonderful man. I owe him so much. His heart was open and loving. He was a walking, talking creative spirit. My deepest sympathies to his lovely wife, Lorraine, and his entire family.

I worked with Richard at Bernstein from 1987 until 2012 and benefited repeatedly from his wisdom, energy, and great sense of humor. He was unfailingly kind at all the right moments and I won't forget his delight when we were successful or his determination to do better when we weren't. I was very sad to learn he has passed and will miss him very much.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Abe's family and many friends. What a privilege it's been to have him in the Air Force Academy Class of '68. He will be dearly missed by so many.

Whenever I visited NYC, Richard could not do enough to assist me. A wise and very generous man. Greatly missed.
I wish to extend both Isabelle and my own condolences to Lorraine and the family. My association with Lorraine goes back to our fathers- a long time ago.

I was a young swimmer in the late fifties and remenber Richard and his father, Jack, they were generous, competive and had good humor. His dad would give me a ride home from swim meets so I did not have to take the subway. I was proud to read of his many achievments in life and deepley sadened to learn of his untimley passing. May he rest in peace.
