RICHARD BOYLE Obituary

BOYLE--Richard J. Former Vice Chairman of Chase Manhattan. Richard J. Boyle, the former Vice Chairman of the Chase Manhattan Corporation, died Saturday, June 11 at his residence in Buck Hill Falls, PA. He was 78 and lived in Palm City, FL. Mr. Boyle joined Chase's management training program in 1965 and rose quickly through the ranks. In 1975, barely 30 years old, as a Senior Vice President he was credited with assisting David Rockefeller, then Chase CEO, with steering Chase through the real estate crisis. This, as well as other accomplishments, led to his promotion to oversee Chase's Global Real Estate Finance Department in 1976. Later, as an Executive Vice President, in the 1980s, Mr. Boyle worked to dramatically change the Corporate Banking segment's business culture from a traditional lending bank to a broader corporate-finance focus organization. In 1987, at the age of 43, Mr. Boyle served as Chief Executive of Chase Manhattan's Global Bank and Vice Chairman of the Board of the Chase Manhattan Corporation headquartered in New York. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Boyle was part of the leadership team who worked on the merger of Chase with Chemical Bank. Mr. Boyle was born on December 4, 1943 in Brooklyn, New York. He was the first of three children born to James F. and Marie Boyle. After completing his secondary education at Regis High School, Mr. Boyle graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 1965. He received his MBA from the New York University Stern School of Business. His philanthropic activities were many and diverse. He served as a board member of Regis High School for six years prior to serving as Chairman for six years. He was on the Board of St. Vincent's Hospital before serving as Chief Executive Officer during their merger activities. Dick also gave his time as Chairman of the Board of the YMCA of Greater New York, the New York Foundling, and the Buck Hill Falls Company, PA. In addition, he served on the Board of the Martin Health Foundation, FL, Treasure Coast Hospice, FL, and Family Promise, NJ. Mr. Boyle also served as a financial advisor to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Newark, NJ. He was a member of the Knights of Malta and the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. His volunteerism was recognized on multiple occasions by these and other organizations. He is survived by his wife, Denise; two children, Ann Marie Myers (Gerald) and Richard J. Boyle, Jr. (Tamara); four grandchildren, Ava and Gregory Myers, Nicole and Brandon Boyle; two sisters, Eileen McCarthy and Kathleen O'Brien (Dennis).
