RICHARD CLAMAN Obituary

CLAMAN--Richard L. The Partners, Associates, Counsel and Staff of Stempel Bennett Claman & Hochberg, P.C. mourn the passing of one of our founding Partners, Richard L. Claman. Richard was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, partner, mentor and friend. Richard was an attorney's attorney. He possessed a vast knowledge of the law, a photographic memory, a sharp intellect and an ability to distill complex matters to formulate clear and concise arguments. Richard always brought an intensity to his work. He was a fierce advocate for his clients, although his intensity never interfered with his inherent kindness and decency. Richard started his legal career as a litigation associate at Rosenman Colin after graduating Harvard College and Harvard Law School, both with honors. After several years practicing at Rosenman Colin, he moved to Seiden, Stempel & Bennett where he established that firm's litigation practice. Over the past 32 years that we practiced with Richard, he grew his litigation practice into one of the preeminent commercial real estate litigation practices in New York City. Richard was also a Jewish scholar who spoke and wrote extensively and founded an online journal of applied Jewish thought zeramim.org. The Firm extends our most heartfelt condolences and sympathy to his wife Beth, children Emily and Karen (Peter), his mother Edith, their extended family and friends. He will be missed. Private services will be held.

I met Richard at Harvard Law School and we reconnected later at T&V Synagogue in NY. I came to know him as the brilliant version of the self I aspired to be. I was shocked by this news and wish comfort to his family.

I just now learned of this tragic loss.

I remember so many wonderful discussions with Richard -- the first being when we met of the first night of staff orientation at Interlaken. His brilliance and inherent decency were hallmarks then and always. We had some contact over the years and always beautiful. What a treat for me years after to have Beth as a Camp Dr. at Eisner and have Richard there as well. I am sorry for the loss and for just learning of it years later. He was a beautiful bright light.

I have fond memories of Richard as a staff member at Camp Interlaken. May his memory be a blessing to you all.

Thank you for so kindly remembering and honoring my father at this tremendously painful time.

More than anything he would have wished for the journal he founded, Zeramim (www.Zeramim.org), to continue, that Jewish thought might continue to flourish, and the site become a resource for all. We are working to create a donation button on the site, but for now, donations can be sent to:

My sincere condolences. I met Richard in the summer of 1979 when we were both summer associates at Rosenman. I worked in the corporate department there from 1980-84 A very nice person and a fine lawyer !
