RICHARD EHRENKRANZ Obituary

EHRENKRANZ--Richard.

Richard A. Ehrenkranz, MD, 72, of Hamden, CT, died peacefully at Connecticut Hospice on August 8, 2018 from complications related to metastatic rectal cancer. Dr. Ehrenkranz was a neonatologist and an international leader in the field of infant nutrition and clinical research. He spent his 42-year career at Yale University School of Medicine. He is remembered as a generous colleague with a remarkable ability to present complex topics in a clear and memorable way. As news of his advancing illness spread, he received countless emails from mentees, students and peers thanking him for being an inspirational leader always willing to share his time and knowledge. Dr. Ehrenkranz also shone clinically -- patients and their families benefitted from his holistic and compassionate care leading many to stay in contact. Dr. Ehrenkranz was born July 28, 1946 in Newark, NJ. He graduated MIT in 1968, Downstate Medical Center, SUNY in 1972 and trained in pediatrics at Yale. After two years at the NIH in Bethesda, MD, he returned to Yale for a Neonatology Fellowship. He joined the Yale Medical School Faculty in 1978, was promoted to Professor in 1988, and remained an active member of the Department through July 2018. He directed Yale's School of Medicine Neonatal Intensive Care Unit's (NICU) Clinical Research Program and was the NICU's Clinical Director (1982-2004) and Medical Director (2004-2012). He was the Interim Director of the NICU, Yale-New Haven Hospital from 2012-2015. Dr. Ehrenkranz continued to live his life fully after his diagnosis in 2010, inspiring others with his courage and dignity until the end. He is survived by his beloved wife, Susan, whom he married in 2000 and with whom he built a wonderful life full of family, friends, gardening, travel, and dinner parties. He is also survived by his sister, Cheryl and her partner, Stuart Motew; his sons, and their families, Jeff and Brianne and their children, Seamus and Rory; Peter and Callista and their children, Aviva and Franklin; and his step-sons and their wives, Thomas Cohn III, Nicholas Cohn and Benvy Caldwell, and Andrew Cohn and Jennifer Tierney. To celebrate Richard's life, a memorial service will be held at Yale University's Battell Chapel, 400 College St, New Haven, CT at 1:30pm on Sunday, August 19, 2018. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to: Department of Pediatrics, Section of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, 333 Cedar Street/PO Box 208064, New Haven, CT 06520-8064, or Connecticut Hospice, Inc, 100 Double Beach Road, Branford, CT 06405.

Five years have passed since Richard left us. It is a blessing to be reminded of his time in our presence. I miss him no less now than I did at the time of his passing. His life offered a profound depth of meaning to those fortunate to be called his friends. His influence continues long after he departed.

I missed Richard's passing last August. It was my pleasure to know him for many years and to engage in discussions about neonatal nutrition- mostly about how much remained unknown. He always was a gentleman, always kind, always generous, and often good for a laugh. He is missed.

I am so sorry and deeply saddened to hear about Rich's passing. May God bless his soul. I knew him very well. I remember the young, tall student with curly hair who joined our group at MIT with Dr. Sanford Miller's blessing. He was full of energy and enthusiasm for his ultimate goal of being a physician. Apparently he succeeded and ultimately completed his journey on this planet. My deepest condolences to his wife, family and friends.

To whomever is reading this, you don't know me. I am the retired Director of Clinical Nutrition Research at Abbott Nutrition. I still give talks to neonatologists and neonatal dietitions about the the nutrition research with preterm infants. For years now, to impress upon my audiences the critical role of nutrition in the long term developmental outcomes of premature infants I have a series of slides recounting Richard's seminal work in this area. His contributions to understanding the impact of nutrition for the most vulnerable population of patients in the hospital are inestimable. His work and insights will be sorely missed.

Sincerely,
Marc L. Masor, Ph.D.

I was so sad to read this, Dr. Ehrenkranz was one of the reason why my son is alive today. My son lived at the NICU for 10 wks and was always there to console, answer questions and just have an uplifting attitude. He will be greatly missed. The last time I saw him at Park Central Tavern I cried and thanked him for all he had done for my son, showing him pictures of the strapping young man he is today. My condolences and sympathies to Susan & his entire family. Sincerely, Jeanine Aceto
