Just went out with some ex-students from NYPSI last month and they mentioned that Richard was there most important teacher. What a loss. What a great guy. What a mind and what a heart. Can't get him out of my thoughts.

I feel Richard's presence so many times each month that I can't fully accept that he is gone. Certainly he is alive in my mind, reassuring and informing me about contemporary matters. I imagine him now very happy that Bernie is doing so well.

So so sorry for the loss of a great man and friend. My heart is so broken looking at these reviews and remembering great times. The last time I saw him, he was so happy and alive, its hard to imagine he is no longer with us....much love to Jo, Nicky and David...

So sorry for your loss. I saw him for many, many years. He was truly my family--or at least a substitute dad. My last visit was after his cancer treatment last spring (?). I didn't know he had died. Very upsetting. He liked to tell me jokes.

Too great a loss to us. A fine scholar, critical thinker and writer. A fine and warm colleague. (And a fellow U of Chicago alumnus.)

Dr. Richard Gottleib reviewed a paper I wrote, "Death of the Loved Spouse a Developmental Psychoanalytic Perspective, in the book Encounters with Loneliness, Only the Lonely(2015).....It was an awesome deep and complicated and complimentary review. That was the first time I knew of him or had contact with him. I thanked him with a million praises. His comments uplifted my spirits; I felt understood and accepted. I wish I had know him earlier and at other times. Today, 5/1/17 I learned of his death...for me he has been alive until today. How strange is life and death. I envy the people who have known him. I hope his family enjoys good memories.

Richard was such a remarkable man, really a renaissance man who was excellent at all he attempted and attempting so much. But what I will remember most is his heart of gold. At NYPSI he leaves a gap that will never be filled and he will be long mourned by everyone he touched. Carmella Perri wrote that we have to keep Richard's bright light within us and I am holding on to that thought at this time.

To the Gottlieb Family: My heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there's a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.
