Richard Lopez Obituary

1959 - 2021
Richard (Rudy) Lopez, 62, of New York City, NY, passed away on October 29, 2021. Richard was born on April 16, 1959 in Los Angeles, CA to Joseph and Virginia Lopez. Being the eldest of 6 kids, he grew up in Whittier, CA and graduated from St. Paul High School in 1977.

At a very early age, Richard loved electronics, building his own crystal radio set and computer room in the garage, equipped with a sensor alarm. Long before Internet, Richard began his career at GTE as a switch engineer. He parlayed his knowledge, joining MCI as a network engineer, moving to San Francisco in the mid-eighties.

Richard, always the adventurer, moved to the east coast with MCI. Given his deep knowledge of switched and data networks, Richard would later rise to become team lead and escalation subject matter expert at MetTel until the remainder of his life.

Richard was an avid volleyball player and served as referee. He was a giver to his community, mentoring those in need and fulfilling a lifelong dream by becoming a volunteer fireman. Richard would enjoy disco dancing, the comedy of Seinfeld and I Love Lucy, good restaurants, the intensity of NYC, and a good laugh with friends and family. He met his fiancé, Caio Cunha, on the east coast, remaining devoted to one another as they held hands until the very end.

Richard leaves behind his fiancé Caio, his mother Virginia, his sisters Debbie and Lori, his brothers Lawrence and Andy, and his father Joseph along with his brother Eddie who both are preceded in death.

I'm really going to miss Rich. He was a good bar buddy and a great friend.

Always so upbeat and warm and welcoming. He would make sure your favorite song was playing on the jukebox right when you walked into the bar (Fleetwood, Pink Floyd, Erasure, 90s Synth pop, everything you enjoyed together), and always make sure there was a free seat next to him to relax and settle into a good conversation.

I'm fortunate to have known him and cherish the memories at Stonewall, Pint, Gym and Lucky 7s. Rich, I'll be raising a glass to you every time I'm back at our bars, and smiling knowing you're looking down on us.

I had the pleasure of meeting Rich at a "White Party" at the "Gilded lily" in Manhattan in 2018 and we hit it off...We had a love for music, especially Disco and dancing...We then kept in touch and went to "Pride NYC" and hung out all day and night, followed by going to see new production of "West Side Story" in 2020 just before pandemic...He was an intelligent, knowledgeable and fun person to be with...Partners in crime, so to speak...Great all around guy...I´m saddened and my deepest condolences to his family friends...You will be missed deeply...This is a pic, he took of our group in 2020...Love and RIP my brother...
